Side effects from Rodent-digestion?

Postby dogs4jen » Thu Sep 08, 2011 9:04 pm

So the Great White Hunter, AKA Austin, succeeded in catching a chipmunk when my husband took him out to play this evening and gulped it down before he could get it away from him. Are rodent bones easily digestible and I suppose they might have all sorts of parasites?
I'm sure Austin thought it was :mmm:

Should be alright, my rat terrier had trouble digesting a whole baby bunny once because of the fur but otherwise I've not heard of many issues. Just keep an eye on him and congratulate his mighty win.

Chipmunks are a natural food for canines - just ask foxes, wolves and coyotes :)
Nom nom nom says my dogs who just ate some frozen mice for a snack. lol

My dogs catch and eat rodents all the time... They caught and killed a woodchuck last month even!! I wish they'd stick with smaller prey, Lena needed stitches after that one!

The rodents can be intermediate hosts for a number of parasites, most of which are either rare or your heartworm preventative will take care of. The one to worry about is actually any fleas the critter was carrying, the fleas can also carry tapeworms.

Thanks, I have been worming him and have one more dose to give him anyway next week, so hopefully that will do in any worms he ingested.
