Stray hasn't pooped :-(

Postby NeedARescue » Thu Sep 22, 2011 8:01 am

Hi all. Happy Thursday! I got alot of help yesterday regarding a stray I picked up Tuesday night on my way home so Jamie, Curly and Red - if you are out there, thanks again so much and I will keep you posted! And Spammie, thanks for the welcome. Cute profile picture. :-)

So my new dilemma is this - poor Chyna-dog has not pooped since at least 6:30 Tuesday night and I'm getting a little concerned. We have an appt. with Dr. Nancy on Saturday for shots, tests, etc., but at much as I've been around dogs I've never had THIS issue come up. Usually I want them to STOP pooping, lol. I'm wondering if it's because maybe he hasn't eaten in awhile and it's going to take his system some time to catch up with the food I've given him. But my thinking was just the opposite, that he would have to go as soon as I fed him because his stomach wasn't used to having food in it.

I know pumpkin is supposed to be a natural laxative so I was going to go home at lunchtime and give him some of that. But does anyone know how long it takes to work? I don't want to give it to him for lunch if I'm going to get home at 6 and find a disaster, lol. :run: Anyone have a clue? Thanks!

It's more like if you take some metamucil or other fiber, it's not like having food poisoning, it takes a while. And just a tablespoon, don't give him too much.

My girls get pumpkin a few times a week as a snack/treat and it usually takes them 6-8 hours if not longer for it to come out. You'll know cause the poop will be a dif shade. More orange :) It doesn't make them have to go like diarrhea makes you have to go, the pumpkin just softens the stool a lil.

Dehydration and stress both cause constipation.
Stress often causes the squirts, but not in all cases.

If you're not fearing a blockage, I think a calm environment with access to regular meals and fresh water will probably due the trick. :)

BA has a point...I've had fosters that didn't poop for a few days due to stress. Then all of a sudden they poop 5 times in one day lol

I honestly wouldn't worry until you go 3-4 days without a defecation.

your vet can do a rectal exam at his visit, give the anal glands a squeeze, and I bet a short walk right after that will get things moving!
