Hard to describe, but here goes
Josey occasionally will gently smack her lips and her tongue comes out a little. I have no idea how to search for this. She usually will do it several times before going to sleep, with me being more aware of it if she is up on my recliner with me. She seems perfectly healthy. I can tell when she is doing it as there is a little sound as her lips come apart. Could it just be a little comforting thing she does as she is falling asleep? I hope someone will know what I'm saying from this description and tell me it is just a doggy thing.

Thank you so much - I was hoping that was it. Can you tell Josey is my 1st dog?
By the way your dog is beautiful - great color.

Def a doggy thing. My 2 do it, and my past dogs did it...all before falling asleep

It's like they're rearranging their tongues.
Also, that is (sadly) not my pup but a foster I had a few weeks ago.
My dad taught me to never be afraid to ask questions-- it's the best way to learn.

Hope that pretty foster got a good home. Josey was the first dog my daughter fostered.
Josey has an underbite so maybe the tongue positioning thing is what she is doing. It is sort of cute and been going on for quite a long time - I just started to wonder. Thanks again.

Doggy thing, and I think it's adorable.

Depending on the dog, I think it looks like they are nursing. Flower sometime flutters her tongue just the eentsy-est bit between her teeth like she's a snake. It's so darn cute.

How interesting - I was thinking about it last night and thinking it could be she is imagining nursing - it would make sense as a comforting thing before falling asleep - I caught it on video this morning and will post later.

I edited this to just catch the incidents - you can see she is almost out of it even with the camera in her face.

Oh Gosh that is so cute.
I know lip licking is a calming signal so maybe dogs do it to help themselves calm down and fall asleep?
