neuter follow up question (graphic)

Postby zack014 » Sat Nov 12, 2005 12:31 pm

Lex got neutered on Halloween. We have managed to keep him relatively quiet and his stiches/incision has healed beautifully although there is still some minor discoloration in the testicular area (sac?). However, I noticed that (I am going to try and be as technical as possible despite the embarassment factor) while one of his testicle sacs (?) seemed normal (like a deflated ballon), the other still seemed like there was something in there and felt similar to what it felt like pre-neuter. I called the vet yesterday and they said that it was the "bulb of the penis" and that it was normal. Has anyone ever heard of this or seen this in their neutered dogs...I really thought that they might have accidentally forgotten to remove one testicle. Sorry if this is too much TMI...not sure if I am being a paranoid parent again.

Okay, I don't really get what you are describing, but here is my guess. There is one "sac" which used to contain both testicles, but should now be empty. It can sometimes take some time to shrink so to speak, but basically it will end up looking like a deflated balloon, as you said.
Then further up, at the end of the penis closest to the scrotum, or nut sac, (I feel ridiculous right now btw...) there is an area that will swell when the dog is excited. When it is swollen it looks like a second set of testicles and, myself included, tends to confuse the hell outta people when they first see it. It shouldn't be swollen all the time though.
I hope this helps.

Sorry...maybe I'm not being clear...(I feel totally ridiculous too  ) But....before he got neutered, it was obvious that he had two testicles (I guess more like one sac, two testicles in it) but now it looks like he has one testicle and the other half of the sac is like a deflated ballon. I have seen the "second set" at the base of the penis, but this is in the very same sac as the testicles....again, sorry for the graphic stuff but thanks for your help!!!!

Can you take a pic? I've posted more graphic pics... lol A pic would definitely make it easier for us to understand you. Also, if it looks too bad, you might want to try to get Lex back into a vet. He was neutered long enough ago that he should be pretty much all healed up. I'm assuming that both of his testicles had dropped completely when you had him neutered? Toda was neutered at full maturity, so he has the empty sac that just hangs there and he never had any kind of lump or bulb in it after the neuter.

I can take some pictures tonight when I get home from work and post them. I just felt kinda funny offering to post pornographic pictures of Lex....! I am wondering if when I called the vet yesterday, they weren't clear on what I was talking about either since the "bulb of the penis" sounds more like what pitgrrl was talking about.

Sometimes after a neuter, especially on adults males, there can be some tissue swelling in the scrotum. It may feel like there is something in there but that's generally what it is.

We had one of our resuces neutered and after it looked like he still had jewels for a while. Just inflamation.

SKoth, that sounds more like what I am talking about... I was worried that there might be a clot in it or something wasn't healing properly. I'll still post the pictures for all to see and give feedback on (I bet you are all really looking forward to it too!!!!)

Here are the pictures I promised...

The red circle is around the area that still seems like there is something in it and the blue circle is around the empty part for clarification.

Does this help??? I hope so! Again, sorry for the graphic nature!!!!

It almost looks like they missed one, doesn't it? Maybe he was hiding an extra one for a rainy day. Okay, I'll stop making light of the situation. Truth is, I really have no idea. I'd make the vet look at it.

My boyfriend just walked into the room and said, "what the hell are you looking at??!"

anyway- i've never seen that before (but I'm no expert  ) I guess just monitor it and if it doesnt go down, drag him back to the vet.

i would go back to the vet, especially if your boy is looking like he feels painful. that looks to me like it might be a hematoma, which could need antibiotics.

or it could not, but i always err on the side of caution (ok, paranoia!) with my dog!

Yeah, that's definitely not the little bulge they get when they're excited. Poor guy! Give him hugs from me and I hope he gets fixed up at the vet.
