Limping dog.....

Postby Modena » Thu Aug 19, 2004 8:34 pm

I just discovered my pit is limping. When she stands she doesn't put pressure on her hind leg, and when she walks she has a slight limp. She hasn't fallen or anything, and isn't outside at all without me. Has anyone ever had a similar issue? I have had a dog with long bone disease before, but I don't remember the signs or anything.

Check the paw first. Look for any redness or swelling. Give the dog a baby aspirin (83 mg, I think) and keep the dog calm. Keep an eye on it for a few days, it might just be a pulled muscle or strain. If it's still a problem after that, get to the vet.

If you find out it's the joints, get your dog some Synflex. That supplement is a miracle in a bottle.

I am not going to second guess Demo,( he knows everything, and thats a fact) but if it was me I would go ahead and take the dog to the vet. Better safe that sorry.

we have the same problem and have gotten the synflex like Ariel has recommended...it seems to work...have gone to 2 different vets and had him tested for lyme disease- he is currently taking demerex cause rimidyl(sp) wasn't working...he is doing better than before but still doesn't put a lot of weight on the back left leg after laying down for long periods of time...the vet told us to not work him too hard so no long long walks or riding with him on the bike  there was some medical term which i cant remember now but its basically some form of arthritis in his ankles and he doesn't have full range of motion (if you try to bend his rear legs up they get about halfway as far as they should and just stop...which probably accounts for his gait) and the last vet said it will never be "normal"...we go back to a specialist on Monday for possible x-rays...good luck with your pup Modena..i would have her checked out...i hope its not the same thing :pray

edit: take a look http://www.pitbullforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3394&highlight=limping+doggie

almost the same subject too...

Where can you get Synflex?? My boy has arthritis in his shoulder. He's only three!! In the near future, I am getting his spine and rear end x-rayed as he has trouble getting up occasionally and limps. He is currently taking glucosamine(hydrochloride form). No improvement yet as he just started taking it.

My dog is limping a bit too. I asked a friend who is a vet tech and she guesses its a strained ligament in her knee. I'm going to bring her the vet if it doesn't seem better in a week or so. She only limps sometimes, and does a funny hop run instead of her usual run. Other than that she seems fine.

Normally I would take her right to the vet, but she acts like a kid who is faking an injury like sometimes she forgets to limp and sometimes she limps. She likes to climb trees and half jump half fall down from them and thats probably why she hurt her knee. I'm going to try and make her rest until next week.

ha! yeah I know. She has to stay in the house no squirrel hunting and no tree climbing so I get to hear a lot of whining at the door.

When my dog was about 8 months old we were at a friend's house. They have 7 fenced acres and she was flying everywhere. She had a blast. After a while she came in and went to sleep. When she woke up she was limping on her rear leg. At first it wasn't too bad, but it got to where she was really gimpy. We looked several times for the cause, but had a hard time finding it. After a couple of hours we were able to see she had a very swollen toe.

She kept wanting to play the whole time, just hopping instead of running. It was almost impossible to keep her calm. The next morniing wasn't much better so off to the vet we went. It turned out she broke her toe running. The vet said it happens all the time and there wasn't too much he could do. He offered a cast but said it wouldn't make much difference in the end.

We didn't get the cast and in a couple of days she was much better, with all limping gone within about 10 days. It never did affect her attitude though.

You never know, keep looking to see if you can fnd the cause, I'm sure your dog is fine, but if it doesn't go away and you can't see the problem, sounds like a trip to the vet is in order.
