How much bigger?

Postby Conan&Rosie » Fri Sep 03, 2004 5:24 pm

My "babies" are getting pretty big. When do they stop growing? Someone told me apbt can fill out until they are 3! Mine are only 7 and 10 months...

Not so at all, Mastiff breeds...Presas and Dogo's yes this is the case. I have seen Presas double in thier muscle mass, broadness of chest and head size all of the sudden between 2 and 3. If a pitbull is taking this long to develop it is because it is mixed with something.

Usually an apbt has it's full height by 10 months to a year. However, they do continue to fill gradually, the chest drops, their skull and head thicken, and they put on muscle mass. Different lines develop at different paces, and it is not unusual for them to slowly thicken up to age 3.

I'd say, on a large male, mature weight of 75, not particularly lean, between 5-10 lbs from age 10 months. Depends on your lines. Xanny was pretty much done by 1, had her first heat at 7 months, a very quick maturing female. I remember hearing a UKC judge comment that there were young males they put up (between 10-14 months) that they regretted putting up, because when mature, they were quite overdone. Liking lean dogs w/some leg myself, I see plenty of males I like until I find out they're only 10 months, and not done filling. Some apbt lines are very slow to mature.

Ok, so now I have a question. With Garion being a pit/AB cross how long will it take for him to mature? He's almost 5 1/2 months and 54#. He's just a touch shorter than Sasha, who's 26 or 27", any guestimates on where he will be at a year??

OK, I see where you are coming from. Mine are still filling out but I consider them grown. I don't consider anothr 15% stretched over a few years too significant. WhenI think of this development level I think of Mastiffs. They can gain a ton of size later on in the game.

I haven't had a pit get heavier after about 1.5, earlier for my little girl.

barbonys, ab's are plenty slow maturing, but there's no real telling when (if) you don't know the bloodlines, or who he's taking after. 54 at 5 1/2 months is in the same size range as our standard bred ab males were at that age, they matured between 75-85 usually. If that's him in your avatar, he's real cute.
