puppy shots

Postby lovemylucy » Thu Jan 04, 2007 3:40 pm

when is it ok to take a lil' puppy out for walks........after initial shots (8 weeks)? or after 4 months? my daughter has a puppy who has only had her first shots (9 weeks) and she lives in an apt and is concerned about putting her on the grass or dirt to potty train? i myself have never had a dog that young...so i don't know

Personally, I prefer to have mine in my own yard only and away from strange dogs until they have had at least 2 sets of shots

Are there a lot of dogs in the complex? Does she have her own little area she can take the pup too?

I agree. I've seen too many pups with parvo to risk it. Ideally she should find a potty spot that has low foot and pet traffic. Then wait to walk the pup anywhere else until after she's had more vacs.

Socialize with people early on until they've had plenty of vaccinations. If you feel the need to socialize with other dogs, wait until they are fully vaccinated. If you like taking the puppy to places like petsmart... carry the dog.

she does not socialize with any other dogs except mine (who are all vaccinated) but she was worried about even putting her down on the ground to go potty.

I wouldn't worry about that too much unless there have been dogs with parvo or distemper in your area recently.

Half of immunity is exposure, and there aren't vaccinations for everything... she can't keep the pup in a plastic bubble!!

Dogs are not immune until 2 weeks after their LAST set of shots - so that would be 14-16 weeks.
