Albino Pits

Postby Addy1423 » Tue Oct 05, 2004 9:26 pm

My old roommate's brother just got a pit from a friend of his... It is completely white his eyes are freaky looking and his dog is deaf. Now he is about a year old but he is probably one of the best behaved dogs I have ever seen... The best part is that he communicates through sign language. My question is do albino dogs normally have a defect of some kind or is that just a trait that he was born with?

In short the pigment, or lack there of in this case, effects hearing because the hairs in the inner ear that pick up sound use the pigment as part of the neurological transmission to the brain. Do a search here and you will find some very useful links from previous threads.

Lack of pigment also effects sight and can effect the immune system.
