Pit Bull walk?

Postby AmstaffMommy » Thu Jun 07, 2007 10:08 am

I had never really noticed it but my Mom said something to me a few weeks ago and I have been paying more attention to how Rocky walks.

When he walks regular pace (not troting or running) and you are right behind him, he sort of sways his whole back end back and forth. Like he doesnt have knees and his back legs dont bend (it is hard to explain without seeing it). When he picks up the pace and trots or runs it seems more normal (legs under the body instead of swinging outside it) and he has never had any problem with stairs or stiffness.

He has walked like this since we got him at 8 weeks so there hasnt been a change. I just started wondering about it when my Mom (non Bully owner) pointed out how weird it looked.

Is this normal??

ps - Both his Sire and Dam were health tested OFa and PennHip.

Its interesting you mention that!! My female definitely has the hip-sway action going on ... but not my male.

My Ruby does this - a stiff-rear-legged walk with her back legs/feet sort of swinging out and around to get into place instead of up and forward.... I assumed it was a structural problem. She has what I call a puppy walk where her rib cage bends out from one side to the next as she walks.

it's the pit bull swagger. They're telling everyone "I'm too sexy for you, too sexy you, too sexy for you, you and YOU!"

TKO has always walked that way. I was worring about his hips the other day (age 10 1/2) and husband reminded me he is just slower than he used to be, so the "waddle" seems more exagerated.

Redhead sways his hips only when walking, and usually it is when he is tired.

When Lou (my quite likely bully mix) walks, her ribcage sways back and forth in a really exaggerated way.

Sabot does the exact same thing.

My boxer shakes his hips when he walks and trots or runs normally, but when he's just mozying along, he swaggers
