Human Conditioner

Postby sharonmissy » Wed Jun 27, 2007 6:18 pm

A co-worker asked me if human conditioner was safe for dogs. For some reason her dog is itching and we think it maybe the conditioner. Any advice or thoughts.

I'm not really sure if it is or isn't, but maybe she should stop using it and see if the dog is still itching. Maybe it's drying out the dogs skin?

I use human conditioner on Loki, but she doesn't get bathed as often as other dogs do. I would probably stop the conditioner if the dog is itchy. Dogs have more sensitive skin than we do, so the ingredients in human shampoo/conditioner are usually more potent than they would be in dog stuff.

The dog doesn't have any flakes, so is it possible that it is something else. I'll advice her to maybe stop for awhile and see if things change.

if it is not organic then I would not use it
there is a reason it does not say for dogs on the bottle
there are so, so many chemicals in most products, unless it is ftom the health food store

She only baths her dog once a month. And the dog is on flea medication. There isn't any fleas or dandruff, so we can't figure it out. I told her to try not using the conditioner. And recommended Earthbath shampoos with conditioner, which I used on Missy.

The fur isn't dried out, so maybe it's some kind of skin condition. What do you think?

Some types of conditioners are strong even on human heads. If they were going to use anything, use a mild conditioner with oatmeal in it.

It could be the fragrance in the conditioner. I buy doggie conditioners for my Goldens.

And the dog is on flea medication.

That could be the problem too. Is it from a vet or pet store ? The stuff sold in pet stores is too harsh for my dogs. (powder, collars, shampoos)

She uses Frontline flea medication, which she bought at a pet store, but it's the same kind sold at the vets. It's possible it could be that. I told her she should tlak to her vet.
