Cake recipe for dogs..Mmm

Postby 6pak » Wed Jul 11, 2007 6:52 pm

I bake this for shady about once every other month. He LOVES it!
I got it out of a recipe book for dogs over at my sister's house.

2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup quick rolled oats
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
6 tablespoons canola oil
3/4 cups molasses
1 3/4 cups unsweetened applesauce
1 large egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 apple, cored & chopped

preheat oven to 350 f
Grease & flour a 13x9 inch pan
stir together flour, oats, baking powder & cinnamon in a bowl & set aside
In a large bowl, stir together canola oil, molasses, applesauce, egg & vanilla.
Add dry ingredients to wet and mix until smooth.
Fold in apple

Spread evenly in pan, bake 25-35 minutes(actually 40-45) or until toothpick comes out clean. Cut into 24 bars. cool completely.(I let it cool before I cut) Store in an airtight container for 5 days or wrap well & freeze up to 2 months.
(I floured the pan a little too much)

I going to make cookies next week for him. All these recipes are made with 100% human ingredients that are dog friendly. Next time I go to my sisters house, I'll see if I can barrow the book. I'll post all the recipes that come out good.

That looks yummy! Add a brown sugar crumble topping and it'd be a great people coffee cake! But maybe put some ground meat in there and then Lila would eat it, lol!

Do you think the cake would come out okay if I replaced the applesauce with baby food?

probably?
I am sure the dogs will eat it, even if it is not pretty to the eye!
just wondering why you want to sub the applesauce though?

now my question for the 'bakers' out there,
can I substitute whole wheat flour for the bleached white all purpsoe flour?

I don't really eat applesauce and although my husband claims to "love" it, he never eats it when we have it. And I know Sabot likes baby food, he gets it frozen in his kong sometimes. I just don't want the applesauce sitting in my fridge until it goes bad. Silly husbands. 8)

Okay, a big fat DUH for me! :headbang: I didn't even consider baby food applesauce. I usually get him the meat flavors. Thanks for pointing that out! His first b-day is coming up, so I'll be testing it out pretty soon.

It'll turn out fine, maybe a bit fluffier, but fine.
