Two questions to help figure this out:

Does he have fleas?

What food is he on?

It can be a stress behavior. The can get lick granulomas, it's a form of self mutilation. If the skin is getting thick and weepy......I would have it looked at by the vet. It will loose all the hair, get inflamed.

It can be environmental allergies, is it the top of the foot or in between the toes? How long has it been going on?

If he's licking his paws...it's most likely an allergy.

though not the best food, Chicken Soup is infinetly better than generic Atta Boy'ish foods... Diamond is another better food that is still very low cost...It is likely that the low quaility food has something to do with the allergy, as allergies can be developed, as well... Could be other things as well...

Have you used any new carpet cleaners or anything receintly?

nope same stuff we always use...tho when we did move into the place it smelled like cat pee :yucky: and the owners had a pro cleaner come and clean but that didnt help. during the summer time the smell came back so hubby and i went to reno to get one of those cleaners that gets rid of cat smell...but that was during the summer and he just started doing this about a week ago. and i just decided to change his food yesterday..went through the forum to see what was best the best food...and since hubby and i rarley get to reno, and the pet store here sells only chicken soup for the dog lovers soul and its such a small town she is the only store here, it sucks.
