Antibiotics

Postby LoveFiona » Tue Dec 04, 2007 1:52 pm

Does anyone know if a dog is supposed to have antibiotics right after surgery? It's a long story, I am having issues with my vet right now and I am trying to get to the bottom of something.

Piper was sent home with antibiotics after his torsion surgery. I don't believe any of them had antibiotics after spay/neuter surgeries, though.

The only surgeries my dogs have had were neutering and the removal of a small lump, but I never used antibiotics with either.

Well you know about Fiona's surgery...the vets office claims they gave us antibiotics, and we don't have them. So we searched EVERYWHERE for these phantom antibiotics they claimed we have, and I called them back and told them all we had is Trumidol (sp?) Hydrocholride (which she finished this morning. The second time I called, they said that maybe they were wrong, and that they only gave me the pain meds. They said a vet tech would call me right back, and that was 3 hours ago. I am very confused and frustrated. I am worried that Fiona should have been on antiobiotics, and they gave me only pain meds and SAID they were antiobiotics. I don't get it.

Does she seem to have an infection?

I don't know, I noticed this morning the area around it is reddish, which started this whole thing. I called to see if maybe an e-collar and some pain meds would help, and they told me she already had pain meds and antibiotics.

See if you can bring her in to have it looked at (it should be at their expense, a follow-up visit). Bring the bottle with you of what you have been giving her.
Do you have a receipt? Did you pay for both antibiotics AND pain meds and only get one?

what kind of surgery?

antibiotics are not the norm for spay/neuter.

Depends on the surgery. My vet won't send antibiotics for neutering, but for more invasive surgeries like repairing broken bones. I don't know if they do for spays, never had a dog spayed there.

Not a spay, she had a tumor removed that was about the size of a quarter.

I wouldn't personally expect to receive antibiotics for a superficial removal. How deep was the growth? Have you found out any additional info (biopsy?)

Streets had a little tumor removed over the summer. No pain meds, nor any antibiotics where given or needed, though I would certainly think a simple re-check should be done by your vet if you're at all worried about it.
