Sometimes it is food related, sometimes it is allergy related.

Sometimes its just the eye clearing its self of debris and normal dirt, same as people eye "boogers". If you are getting copius amounts or having to clean it often during the day you may want to speak with a vet about it to see if it may be an infection or allergy.

Should have asked. What color is the eye goop?
Any time I see green eye goop, the dog goes to the vet.

Sidney gets them due to her allergies and they are brown/grey. I don't worry about these ones.

Rex gets them every morning and then we just wipe them off with a napkin...

green or creamy can be pus, which would indicate an infection. However, if it's just a few eye boogers, it's not likely to be an issue no matter what color they are. Now, if the eyes are also red and irritated, or there's snot from the nose too, or they're squinting and tearing or sneezing to go with it, then THAT is a definite indicator of a problem and you should see the vet.
