What do you spend on Dog Food per MO.?

Postby damienApbt » Wed Mar 19, 2008 7:21 pm

I almost dont want to know what my monthly bill is for Rod. I'm calculating as I'm posting this. I get preground raw diet from natures variety. Its a bit more than pimal, but you feed less of the NV.

Any ways its embarrassing but I spend $28 for 6lb of food. Its a week's worth since i fast him one day a week and feed him 1lb/day.

Which comes to about $122.66/ month..... but whos counting?

I'm not bragging or anything.. I was just thinking out loud. I feed him a raw diet because of his allergies and I'm a little bit lazy to try and figure out the Barf diet on my own. I've tried it but just dont have the patience.

eta: I didn't add under 20, because I've been paying out the wazoo for food so long that I dont believe that food exists. And if you get your food for free I dont want to know lol

I figured about $50-$70 a month. One 16 lbs. bag of Timberwolf's Ocean Blue (sadly, yes, this is what I have to feed Ella right now and probably the rest of her life) lasts me 3 weeks and is about $36 (or is it $34?). FINE. I should have picked the bracket a tad higher but I forgot about it the price raise in the food. Anyway, I also buy sardines and $1 lamb steaks for her occasionally. Plus, plain yogurt. Crap, fine, now I'm up more towards $80 or $100, but it's hard to calculate those extra things in when I don't give them to her all the time and I don't keep track of when I buy them.

i feed raw, partially premade, partially not . . . i think i sort of have it down to a bit of a science now and i pay $100/month in premade for all 3 dogs, then on top of that another $50 to $100 or so in meat and supplements for all 3 as well.

so anywhere from $150 to $200/month for all of the dogs. and just thinking about that makes me realize why i never buy new clothes for myself anymore. :frown:

I buy my food (Dog Lover's Gold) from the distributer usually, and he gives me a price break, so I pay $28 for a 15 kg bag (about 33 pounds). That lasts me pretty near a month. I sometimes have some extra stuff I add, which might add $10 or so a month. So maybe $40 a month to feed my 3 dogs?

Feeding two dogs RAW here (before Shelby appeared at our doorstep) costed me about $80-$100/mo. When Shelby came along, I wanted something cheaper, and decent, that the dogs could all eat. I found the site www.westcoastpetsupply.com and their price of 40 lbs. of Canidae is $28.99, and then $20 to ship it over here. So I pay about $50 for 40 lbs. of food for 3 dogs, and I'm guessing (and hoping) it lasts about a month.

We probably spend $50-70 for two dogs... two 40 pound bags of Lamb dog food at $23.99 each, plus 1 large tub of plain yogurt/week and that's it.

We make our treats by soaking kibble in sodium free broth, and sometimes I'll feed them a chicken breast, but that's not all the time.

14-17 bucks
Emma eats Kirkland Signature and its 14-17 bucks for a 40 pound bag. They always change the price. But you can only get it at Costco. And the bag last longer than a month. Around 2 actually.

We spend about $60 per month to feed 4 adult dogs.
I voted $50-$70, but it didn't specify amount per dog... (unless I missed that part)

I feed raw. Since I go through a raw dog food co-op, I get "humanely raised" meat from small farms at a much cheaper price than at a grocery store. I generally spend $1.40-1.70/lb of food.

I probably spend between $90-105/month for two dogs.

We go through somewhere between 1 and 2 bags of Canidae a month. DVP for training treats and the occasional extras, I figure $50-70/month, though it may be more.

Price is an issue, and while there's a raw co-op just across the bridge in SF, I'm never available on the pick-up day!

So, he eats dog kibble mostly ($35-$45 per 30 to 35 lb bag), along with some other stuff like yogurt, cottage cheese, raw meats, recreational bones (tho' he's been breaking teeth lately on those, so he's just been getting stuffed Kongs and Buster Cubes, etc.), whatever I have on hand.

However, I spend too much money on dog treats considering Booker likes organic, free range, shade-grown Himalayan Golden Koala meat treats just the same as Milk Bones and plastic string cheese wrappers from the trash. lol

Plastic cheese string wrappers are Carrie's FAVORITE treat lol

Or any piece of plastic that has held food would be her preference :)

For one dog, we're in the 50-70 range just for food (TOTW + @7 cans of Merrick) and some treats but when we have to do a big re-stock on the treats (Zukes, Solid Gold Jerky, bones, etc), it's more like $80-90. It was slightly cheaper before when we were feeding Canidae.

Is it just more expensive in the SF Bay Area or should I shut up and get a Costco card to buy the Kirkland? lol I almost feel like I'm doing something wrong spending the same amount that others spend to feed multiple dogs!

Thanks Damien for making me think about the $$ aspect  We were actually talking tonight about doing raw egg and yogurt instead of the canned food... and she really likes cardboard paper towel rolls, maybe I'll cut those up for treats lol

i normally spend $178 every 2 months for premade raw for the 2 dogs, plus i spend around $80 at Weis for whole chickens and turkeys for them..

i go thru 70 lbs a month for the 2 dogs, and i normally get 110 lbs of premade from my source to help the whole prey along.. i have been going every 2 months for the premade from a butcher who grinds her own meats for me and others ..
