Some dogs do, some don't - but a lot of times it's a habit that they never stop doing - even after the testicles are gone.

- From the pics, it looks like the dad isn't that muscular - it may just be the white coat - but he looks kinda out of shape

Mom looks better - but it's hard to tell with so much white, it washes out the definition of the dog's shape in the pictures

Your dog looks good. If you get him neutered - he will still gain muscle and size - it's not something you have to worry about. Just excercise him and provide a good diet - everything will be fine.

x2 - I'd do it at 6mos. After that you're pushing it...marking wise, anyway.

I have Oso's 6month b-day marked on my calendar. But still have to wait 4 months. LOL.

I believe in doing it early. Lexus was spayed at 6mo too.

Got my boy done around 7 months. The girls...well, as soon as possible, and hopefully before their first volcanic eruption. ;)

Don't feel bad. You are doing a very good thing for your dog, and greatly reducing the risk that he will develop prostate cancer when he gets older.

I know it is for the best. I just feel bad that he has to go through it. It's just the mommy in me. ;)

We were going to wait until Jake was 2 years old to have him neutered but I am leaning towards a year now.

I would neuter anywhere from 1 year to 18 mos. Personally the longer I can wait, the better.

We try to neuter at 12-15 weeks... It depends on if the testicles drop or not... We just did a 9 week old APBT pup becuase his testicles had already dropped... he was super dominant already anyways...so hopefully it calms him down... only Bully Buddies will know if it made a difference... since he's on his way to them LOL

Bahamamutt included some links... from what I've seen, early neuters make a taller dog that lacks the muscling I prefer. I like what testosterone does for the growing male. These dogs don't finish maturing for a long time...

It's also important to note that I'm personally quite able to keep an intact male from being bred unintentionlly. If a person is not, then the should consider an earlier neuter. I also show dogs, so often times they have to be left intact until a title is obtained... we recently neutered a male at about 4.5 years old

Steph, what are your experiences with a neutered dog marking in the house? More common than not? The only reason why I would get Jake neutered at 1 years old versus older is the fear of him marking in the house, otherwise, I will wait until he is 2. I am a responsible dog owner and I am not scared of an accidental breeding.

I meant to say I am not scared of having an accidental breeding happen because I am a responsible dog owner that takes extra precautions.

You know what I mean!

With marking in the house, I think if you have them from puppyhood and do a good job house training it's not an issue. It can be harder bringing an older, intact male in the house... but a pup shouldn't be a big deal.
