what flea preventative do you use?

Postby someday » Sat Jun 14, 2008 6:00 pm

We've always used Frontline Plus. Lately it just plain doesn't work. I know it's supposed to be a bad year for fleas, but come on! Is anyone having better sucess with a different product?
We have hard wood floors and I vacuum the furniture, so there really shouldn't be an infestation of any kind.

People in our area (Baton Rouge and surrounding) have been having problems with Frontline lately... our fleas seem to be developing a resistance to it, and it's just not working like it used to. So you might be experiencing the same thing. At the clinic where I work we're selling Promeris to the old school Frontline users. It's very similar, waterproof like Frontline, etc... just a different chemical that fleas haven't seen. So far people seem to like it. I haven't tried it yet myself, but will likely switch to that or Sentinel soon.

I was using frontline and then advantage...neither were working for more than a week...my vet said they aren't working longer than two weeks anymore (at least in my area) he thinks the fleas are becoming immune to it (if that's possible?). We started comfortis a few months ago, it seems to be doing the job.

I use advantix. I've been told promeris stinks to high heaven... but haven't actually tried it myself.

Yup, the Promeris does have a strong eucalyptus odor. I don't mind it that much myself, but I can definitely see how it might bother some people, especially those with sensitive noses. What I've been told is that the fragrance wears off about 24 hours after application. But I don't have personal experience with that yet so can't verify.

I'm curious about the Comfortis. Does that prevent ticks as well as fleas?

No, it only does fleas unfortunately. My dogs will pick up a few ticks when we go hiking and I just do a tick check when we get home and pick 'em off. They were working on approving it for cats to, I don't know if they have yet.

I tried Promeris this year. It does have a strong, but nice eucalyptusy smell...kinda nice and it's gone the next day. So far, it seems to be working.

I give it 2 thumbs up and a double circle snap

I used advantage last year with no problems. This year I am using frontline plus, because I got it for free :) So far, so good.

OK, I work at a Vet Clinic here in Gallup and I get the K9 Advantix 1/2 price so that's what I use. It works excellent and with the Horrible Tick problem here we have to use it.

I also have the dogs on Heartworm Preventative down here because they had a K9 dog in Albuquerque contract Heartworms and since we train near a river and have lots of mosquitos I went ahead and started them on it.
