Questions regarding paper/puppy pad training an older dog?

Postby abbybaby2011 » Fri Aug 30, 2013 9:30 am

Ok so my bf asked me to post this for him as we have been discussing it lately. He has a 12 year old Boxer/Great Dane mix living in the house & the other day, his vet suggested paper training the dog because the steps in & out of the house are getting difficult for the dog to climb & so is carrying him in & out. So we have a few questions about it. How difficult would it be to train an older dog to use papers/pads? Any tips or advice to get started? As I am new to paper training, I don't know for sure how to go about this. Thanks! :)

And another thing, as Chevelle is also in the house & uses the bathroom outside, do you think letting the other dog use papers will confuse Chevelle as to where she is supposed to be going?

Imo I would work on training one on the pads and reinforce the other for going outside

I've never paper trained an adult dog but I would imagine the much harder portion of that is keeping the other dog from taking advantage (my male was apparently paper trained as a puppy before he lived with me, and will pee on a pile of newspapers anywhere he finds them.)

I think set eating/pottying schedules would help a good bit.

Could you also maybe install a ramp or some other more accessible options for the older dog?

Well the paper training is going. Not well, but going. He still has accidents from time to time but Chevelle pays it no mind. She still goes outside with no glitches.
