Trick of the month

Postby BabyReba » Fri Mar 04, 2011 9:14 pm

Lilangel had a great idea: How about a "Trick of the month" thread, where we post up one thing we could all teach our dogs and post notes and videos to document our progress.

Everyone who played along would all work on the same trick during that month. So for March, if we chose "army crawl," we could start that month out by describing the behavior we want and give a general idea what it should look like, then maybe some of the more advanced training folks could help us along to show us how to shape the behavior. Then as the month progresses, everyone could post progress notes and videos and ask for critiques, troubleshooting, ideas, suggestions to improve on the results they're getting ... could be a good learning experience for all of us and a chance to work together on training projects with our dogs.

Red started something like this a while ago in a thread she started ... this would be similar, but we'd all have one specific goal/task to work on at the same time, and we could change it up each month to keep things fresh. I'd also think we could start a new thread each month, rather than have one long, multipage thread with all the months lumped in together ... that way it'd be easier to keep straight who's doing what

If it's successful, maybe we could even have a subforum or something in training.

What do you guys think? If there's enough interest, we could start a trick thread for March, since the month is still new.

OK, lemme see if I can find any good, clear "how tos" by clicker trainers online for this one ... would be nice to get everyone started using a clear set of instructions, for anyone who isn't sure where to begin. Unless lilangel or stormi or red or someone wants to lead the charge, which would be fine by me as well.

I think this is a great idea! I think it will give me some direction on where to go with my clicker training. As you can see from this thread viewtopic.php?f=6&t=145185 , I'm having some trouble.

So it is "crawl" this month? Tess already knows that one, but I could teach it to Pirate.

I just worked on this with Becky :) She's very fast at learning new things...I tried to fade the lure a bit too quickly though and she thought I wanted roll over...oops. I also tried with Marlo...um...he wouldn't lie down on the wet grass  . We'll have to work on this on this one inside. He does a fun backwards crawl that I didn't even teach him, he just offers for his ball.
