It sounds like you're asking about housebreaking, not crate training. If she's four months old, she's only physically capable of holding it for four hours, really. Five at the most.

Most young puppies will need to potty after playtime, as well. If you let her go, then play with her and immediately re-crate her, she's worked up a need to potty again and has no other choice. Take her out, then play, then take her out again.

And 9 hours is a long time for a puppy of that age to hold it overnight. Take her out at midnight and again at 5am. It means broken sleep for the human, but it won't be that way forever-- just until her bladder size and strength are up to longer stretches of time. Most dogs don't want to roll around in their mess; but in a small crate, it's pretty unavoidable if they haven't been able to physically hold it.

My puppy is almost 5 months old now and we take her out again just before we go to bed between 11 and 12am and then most of the time she is fine until 5-5:30am. Sometimes she wakes us up earlier. One day she even slept until 7am roflmao
