Oh No..it's another rare breed, only this time it's a FILA!!

Why buy from a breeder when there are plenty of homeless pups in shelters???

Oh No..it's another rare breed, only this time it's a FILA!!

Postby ProudMommy77 » Mon Sep 01, 2008 9:48 pm

Ok, so my Saturday afternoon at work was going nice and easy, until a call came in for picking up a stray. The nice officer says "oh there's a Shar-pei being a menance, in a not so nice area of town"..and of course, being the lucky duck I am, gets to hop in the little white van, armed with only a snare pole, and some dog food, and a bowl and catch the holy terror. Let me tell you..I was quite shocked when I got there to see what I was up against. I actually asked the officer, "do you know what that is?" But, it's part of my duties to catch, and be humane. Needless to say, it's not a Shar-pei, it's a Fila. While I know, I joked around alot about what's next a Fila, and what not. Really, I was just kidding, I didn't exactly expect to go and pick one up. So, here he is, skin and bones.

He is roughly six months old, very underweight, and because of the lack of nutrition has lost some of his teeth, they actually ended up rotting, he has some funky skin condition going on, but we haven't established what exactly. What I did find upon my inspection of this little boy, is some old puncture wounds, and very over grown toe nails. His demanor well, he is a Fila, so it's typical of the breed, I try not to do anything to piss him off, but I have found as long as I control the food, I control him, he will actually work for food, he will sit, and he will do "how scary am I" bark. When he performs those task I let him have his treat, or dog food. Due to the amount of health issues this little guy has, I really need to get him moved into rescue, that and he is a Fila, and this area has NO BUSINESS handling a dog like this. I always said if a Fila comes threw the doors I am going to run in the other direction. But, I am compassionate, and feel bad for the little guy. No dog, regardless of the breed should have to live or be put threw that. He is showing signs of dog agression, he is fine listening to dogs bark, but becomes quite pissed off when actually seeing the dogs. Included are some pics of his condition, cross posting is greatly appericated. Any ideas, are wonderful also, I really need to see him move in the next two weeks, because the people up there just don't understand breeds like this. For more info, or ideas please contact me, either PM me or feel free to give a call if you have a good contact for Filas. 570-593-8111.

We had a dog recently with a thyroid condition and her skin had that look to it.
Good luck, I hope you can find him a rescue!

Thank you Maryellen. I did call and leave a messege with them, and a few of the Mastiff rescue groups. And I have been calling the larger shelters asking for some direction, and I am not having any luck here. I was very serious when I told them yesterday afternoon, about handling him with caution, and making sure the blanket was hung up while he was in his kennel. Wish me luck in my new adventure of getting this one out of here. All I can say is what's next?????

 ...you are awesome Maryellen. Thank you again, sadly enough I heard back from a Mastiff rescue, and they didn't want anything to do with this guy. I will keep trying.

Oh wow... I haven't been around in a while and the first thing I click on is a Fila?! Poor thing... I love Filas (don't know that I could ever own one, they take such a special kind of home) but they are so beautiful.

The poor thing. :( All I can do is wish you luck.

Filas aren't supposed to be indescriminately aggressive. He's probably scared and on the defensive, and obviously hasn't been socialized properly.

I think he is in some pain due to his skin issues, and teeth, so I would be grumpy also. But, let me just be up front and honest, we are not dealing with a high caliber of people in these parts. And just to be blunt, they lack a lot of canine knowledge and handling skills. And cannot even correctly identify the breeds of dogs, even something as simple as a Poodle. For some reason, there is one person that keeps getting attacked by every canine in the facilty, while I have my own veiws on that, there seems to be quite the mishandling of canines while certin people are on shift. This is not a nice shelter, I could go on raving for quite some time about the crap that goes on. However, lol..my main concern is moving the rare breeds that require a certin savvy home. And making sure the dogs there are adopted into the correct home, not just any place.
One of my biggest worries at this point, is the mishandling of him, and getting him into a place that will give him the structure and medical care he is need of.

lol lol I think I remember you saying something along the lines of "first the Corso, then the Russian thingy. What next a Fila?

I think you brought this upon yourself. lol

On a more serious note: Poor guy! He looks terrible! Good luck with the rescue!
