a possible goodbye to my friend Leo

Why buy from a breeder when there are plenty of homeless pups in shelters???

a possible goodbye to my friend Leo

Postby Stormi » Sun Dec 31, 2006 3:16 am

The doggie daycare I work at takes in and fosters some of the really desperate cases from the local shelter here. Leo (although not a pit... he's some kind of flat coat mutt mix) is our boy who has very very bad food aggression. Its to the point where its very dangerous for someone who isn't skilled in dog behavior to even be near him when there is a bowl of food involved. Take the bowl away and he becomes a very sweet little cuddle guy (and quite the bed hog too, might I add). I don't doubt that if he had a steady life and an owner who was willing to work with him of his problem, he could potentially be trained out of it. But a doggie daycare is not the place for that kind of one on one attention, so he has officially been deemed unadoptable and is being shipped of to a "last chance" sanctuary of some kind. I have no idea if he'll last long there or not. I know its stupid to be sad about a dog like this when there are so many wonderful pups out there with no issues at all in the same boat, but for whatever reason, this little guy found a special little place in my heart. I'll sure miss him when he goes.

the ones with the problems usually take the biggest space in your heart. :frown:

yup. I know you understand this first hand.

I wish I could take him, but I know I'm certainly not qualified to deal with his level of aggression. I wish there was something I could do for him, because he really is a very sweet boy when there's no food around. He knows basic commands and obeys well... but I guess you can't save them all :frown:

yes give him some love. if anything at least he knew someone in his life who loved him enough to remeber him forever. often times, problems of tht type obscure their reality. a hazy life is not one for these dogs to suffer through. i commend you for giving him the time and thought, for many would pass him over.

that's a good idea. I usually only work one day a week, so I hope he'll still be there this weekend. I want to be able to give him a good-bye hug and maybe take him for a walk or something since he rarely gets that.

Yay!! Leo is staying for at least a couple more weeks before being sent off, so I was able to steal him for a nice 3 mile walk today. Aside from being kind of a bad puller, he did fine. There was a couple moments where he looked like he was trying to mimic Jack (who is trained to walk directly at my side). I think he had fun and I'm sure it did him good to get out for a little bit. Usually if he's lucky he'll get a walk around the block a couple times a week. This is the only half decent photo I got of him on my camera phone...
