Best way to find an SBT for adoption?

Why buy from a breeder when there are plenty of homeless pups in shelters???

Best way to find an SBT for adoption?

Postby malibufishnsurf » Sat Mar 31, 2007 12:21 pm

I know I'll never find an SBT through petfinder.

Is it best to contact the various SBT rescue societies and give them my info?

Staffy Bull Terrier?

not sure what you mean?

But if you go to petfinder and put in Pitt bull as the breed you will find about 100 different sizes/shapes plus hundreds needing homes?

I typed in Staff
and came up with pages and pages in my area?

American Staffordshire Terrier ??

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

There are some SBT only rescues. I'm pretty sure there is one in Ontario, they may be able to refer you to one closer to you. I'll see if I can find out what they're called, or you could try pm'ing pittymomma- she'll know.

On Petfinder, you can find dozens for adoption.
What about Pit Bull Rescue Central??

Yes, Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

I'm in CA.

No, they can not be found on petfinder.

I don't know if they are good/bad, but I've looked at their page at SBTs a few times.

There are 843 on Petfinder. Where in CA are you?

This shelter seems to have a few of them (it's in LA).
Not sure if linking to searches works, but it's worth a try. http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi

But did you see some of the dogs they listed as SBT? they are not. I think this is what Kim and Sarah were trying to explain in a different thread, many dogs are mislabeled as SBT, so many people give up looking. I am sure it can be frustrating.

I would definately go with a specific SBT breed club/rescue.

I just did the search, I have no way of telling which dogs are SBT and which aren't (I'm not that knowledgeable in distinctions between the breeds).

It is actually pretty easy if you see a few :), and the OP is right - the dogs on petfinder and pbrc are pretty much never actual SBTs. People use the label because it sounds 'safer' I think, or because it will draw more attention.

To the OP, generally the national breed clubs have a rescue organization within them.
The other option (route I took) was to go and talk to some breeders you find reputable and ask if they ever have any rehomes, etc. Also, there are some SBT cross puppies listed on here, as well as an 8 year old SBT through Bully Buddies.

We also have a 6 year old MN registered SBT that just came into our care. I will be contacting his breeder this week, but they are already aware that he has lost his home. He is very sweet, but needs an SBT knowledgeable home, as he has been passed around and has lacked boundaries. He is currently learning that he can not bark at people whenever he wants something (like a toy, or your dinner). Pretty good with dogs and cats, but gets jealous easily so needs quidelines. Drivey, ball-obsessed boy, but had a broken leg at a year so not a candidate for agility, etc.

Pics coming shortly.
