UPDATE: 9-10-07
I ended up adopting this wonderful girl!! My two pitties and I loved her way too much to give her away. She is now a chunky happy loved girl!!

Nala when she was skinny, but not as skinny as in the beginning!

Nala is a small pittie girl that I fell in love with at the shelter, where I work as an ACA, volunteer, and foster. Nala was found as a stray dog, and judging by her stretched breasts, used as a breeding dog. Nala came to our shelter very very skinny, and she must have just had pups. She always wagged her tail, and had no problem being in the shelter. I would take her out and she would accompany me as I did my work. She passed temperment testing with flying colors.

Our shelter has long been full, and dogs where getting put down left and right. I had a feeling because of Nala's breasts and how skinny she was, and that she was a pit, she would never make it to adoption. I asked them if I could foster her, and they said yes. When Nala went to the vet to get spayed, they wouldn't spay her because they found out she had a heart murmur.

Nala was going to be put down, and I had to beg and plead with the shelter for me to keep her, get her x-rays, and figure out exactly what is wrong with her heart.

She has been at my house for over a week. SHE IS AMAZING! She is very attentive, gentle, sweet, great with my cat, and an absolute lover with my two pits. My girl pit Xena is in love with her, I think she has a girlfriend!

Nala saw the vet yesterday, and she has heart desease, and he is sending the X-rays out to a radiologist for more accurate readings. I am not sure what is exactly wrong yet, but unless I get a rescue to help me fund future vet visits, I don't have the money to keep sending her to the vet, and the shelter will just want to put her down.

A dog like Nala deserves a chance in life, she has a stunning personality, she loves to cuddle, she is housebroken, she likes her crate, she doesn't chew anything up, loves playing fetch, and learned sit in one day!! This dog would make someone a happy happy happy family.

Nala is also great with kids, she plays with the neighbors next door, from toddlers to teenagers. She also is the type of dog that picks flight over fight. When Xena tries to steal toys from Nala, she happily gives her the toy and walks away, without a care in the world. Hopefully Xena will learn from her!

I hate to say it, but if she has severe cardiac issues... it's probably best to put her down. Cardiac issues are so rampant in the breed, and depending on the type and severity, it's ridiculously expensive and not fun when one day your pet drops dead.

I hope hers aren't as bad as they sound right now.

Hopefully it's not as serious. If it is I understand that they would want to put her down. In which case I might keep her until I see her suffering (which she shows no signs of that right now), and put her down when the time comes. But if it's something small or fixable I want to give her a chance.

I hate when people put their pets through hell to keep them barely alive, I wouldn't do that.

Thank you for fighting for her and giving her this chance. People sometimes just want to give up. She does deserve this chance in life. ^_^

I wish I can save shelter dogs and make a difference like you have with this girl, but sadly no animals are allowed in my home. :frown:

GREAT NEWS!!!

Postby pinkcow » Thu Jul 12, 2007 4:55 pm

Great news everyone!! I am so happy to say that everyone at the shelter was wrong, and so was the vet! I would never think I would say these words with joy, but Nala has pneumonia!!!!

My dog Red is sick now (kennel cough) so I have to get some treatment for him! Woops!

I'm sure with all the love Nala is getting and all the good food and meds she will pull through!! Oh I am so happy for her, she is just too awesome to die. I had this horrible feeling in my gut that I was just here to make her last days on earth as fun and comfortable as possible. I'm glad that's not the case. :))

Congrats!!!! Wonderful news. She has that intense focussed look that the best red-nose dogs have. After what you've been through together, you're sure to have a deep connection.
