Why buy from a breeder when there are plenty of homeless pups in shelters???

Soleil.... sick puppy

Postby Ellena » Fri Sep 28, 2007 1:30 am

So those of you that know me know I work at the local Humane Society.. for those of you that dont, now you do and you will understand how the pup came into my care.

This is Soleil (so-lay) and she came into my work on Monday. Apparently a woman called the shelter asking for help for a puppy she found a week ago in her yard and she said she thinks she is an APBT. My co-worker told her to come in and ask for me and she did.

I was presented a 4 week old APBT (I think possibly Boxer) puppy who was lethargic and had bloody diarrhea for the last 2 days. The woman wanted me to "Fix" her and then get her back, I explained that it doesnt work that way. After an hour long conversation, taking her to see my vet, ect, the woman admitted that she was mentally ill and unable to care for the puppy. This was after she also told me the pup nurses on her armpit hair at nite. :yucky:

I convinced her to surrender her to the shelter and I became her custodian.

Immediately after the woman left, the bloody diarrhea started so we rushed a parvo test. It was negative. DHLPP and Bordatella not to mention Strongid were then given to her. She went home with me that evening as her immune system could not handle the disease of the shelter.

Very little eating, more diarrhea and a sleepless nite for me, Soleil came with me to work the next day to have more tests done. She had NO stool while at work, all the blood tests came back fine, so we did SubQ LRS and I started syringe feeding her IVD weight gainer for puppies.

The next day (Wednesday) she had diarrhea while at work (success!) and I rushed her over to the vet and they did a stool sample. I went back to work only to have the vet come and pull me aside to tell me that this puppy had the worst case of coccidia she had ever seen.

So liquid Albon and SubQ LRS (50cc's) daily will hopefully get things back on track.... please cross your fingers that she starts responding to the meds and starts gaining weight.

She's adorable and for a dog that is so sick, she looks pretty sparky!

And Jamie, I do see the "Beagle" in her... but I also see APBT and Boxer. I guess once she fattens up we will be able to tell better.

:inlove: What a lil firecracker!

She reminds me a lot of a little brindle foster pup we had about a year ago.
