Neutering??

Postby BigHeadedMachine » Wed Jul 23, 2008 8:14 pm

Hey all im just woundering about the neutering situation,

my boy is 17 weeks now i know the youngest to neuter is usually 6 months and ive heard all different stories, some say

the longer i wait to neuter him the more he will grow?

and some say it dosent matter ?

i was planning on getting him done at 8 months just to give him a bit more time to grow ? ( if thats true ? )

i dont plan on breeding

thanks all :headbang:

The best thing to do is talk to your vet, both about health concerns for early neuters, and consideration for behavior and responsibility for later neuters.

I believe health-wise probably around a year or older is best to allow for full growth of the joints and such, but you must be a responsible owner, and there are behavior concerns as well.

(unrelated to your case, but I believe there are not the same growth issues for females, and it's generally accepted that before the first heat, so under six months, is best for both health and behavior for them)

If you can safely keep him away from any females in heat, I would wait until he's mature to neuter.

Hmmm, I wonder if that's why my male squats like a girl to pee - because I got him neutered before he was 6 months old? Interesting.

Probably not. Shady didn't get snipped until he was 5. Unless we are out on a walk, he squats also.

Nope,
My parents had an unaltered male that was boxer/lab and he squatted every day of his life.

I take that back, he lifted his leg ONCE . . . . too bad it was his front leg - he never did figure it out. lol

I actually prefer this with boys, that they never learn to "lift their leg" because they then want to (sometimes) mark all over the house.

Then again we had our GSD neutered at around 6mos., he's large, gorgeous and definitely masculine and he sometimes lifts his leg.
:dunno:

I'd encourage most pet owners (not working or show dogs) to do it earlier than later.
It can save frustration later on when they are mature and smell females in heat all over town.

ok so is i got him done before his first heat ( for boys do you call it heat too ? ) he will not lift his leg to pee ?

and if i wait till say 7 months he will lift his leg? and still go after females in heat even though hes neutered ?

There is really no correlation to neutering and lifting their leg to pee.

Will it look better for you if he is neutered, given the restrictions on the breed in NZ? If so, I would go ahead with it at the 6 month mark

my male was neutered at 5 months old and squatted to pee. once he saw my older male lifting his leg he started lifting his leg.. he also walks and pees at the same time too..

if you are not showing him then neuter him. being you got him at the pet store, neuter him..

males dont go into heat, only females do..

That's funny, the first time shady squatted was after he saw my mom's female dog do it.
