bones

I was wondering if the the marrow bones you can find in the supermarket are good for dogs. Someone told me that they boil them for there dogs and then give them to them and they love it. Are these safe?

Cooked bones of any kind aren't a good idea, as they can splinter and cause damage. I do have one ultra thick cow bone that I let them gnaw on sometimes (a friend brought over) but only because they could make no headway on it-it was like a rock. By the time Daisy chipped it I put it away. Mine prefer the biggest nylabones...the ones for powerful chewers. They last a very long time compared to everything else.

I buy the raw marrow bones right out of the meat section in the supermarket. If they are too long, I'll ask the butcher to cut them in half so they can get all the marrow out. They are usually labeled soup bones. The dogs love them!

Do you boil the bones for your dog? Or just feed them the bones raw?

I just give them to them raw.

I also feed my dog raw marrow bones. He loves them and they keep his teeth clean. The smallest ones that I give him are about 4".

I always wanted to buy marrow bones for my dog, but which section is it off of and which animal? How thick is it, and usually how long is it? Pictures will be nice, so I can find it easier.

This is a pic of one that Kato's in the middle of eating right now.
It's about 5" in length. The bone is from a cow and I think it's the femur.

I don't cook them. I also remove some of the marrow because my dog has a funky stomach.

They're not very thick. One of my dogs can chew them up (she's a hardcore chewer), and the other one can't or wont...she just licks the marrow out (lazy thing). I like them because they're cheap and even when they lick the marrow out, they'll chew on them (except lazy )

Awww, thanks for posting the pics. They're awesome! Kozmo is one of my favorite bullies.

I just measured the bone and it's approx. 5/8" thick although most of the bones seem to be 1/2".
After he strips it, I wash it and use it like most people use a kong. I stuff it with peanut butter.

Those are easy chews for my kids. I tend to get the cut ones, so they are halved and jaws can't get stuck in the bone. They last a day or so, my pug will have one chewed in a couple of hours, he's real hard core.

i usually get knuckle bones for luce, "soup bones" from the local butcher. they come with some meat on them. she thinks they're fabulous. she eats off the meat, them scrapes out the marrow, and eventually if i don't replace it, she'll eat the whole bone. they smell TERRIBLE until she gets the meat cleaned off .
