i guess if you guys can help me in the central florida area...vero beach or anything close i guess. not sure how much my vet is gonna charge. but i came here for a question....

is it true if you spay before they are fully matured that they would not get to its full potential size? this is a female by the way. thanks for the help.

Im in California, so I do not have a clue for anything where you are located. Have you tried calling the shelters to see if they have any spay clinics?

As for your question ... I spayed my girl at 4months old. She is now 18 months, and weighs in aboput 50 pounds. It didn't seem to phase her being spayed at a young age. She still has her nice tight belly and figure because she was spayed before ever going into heat. My girl seemed to mature very nicely and in good shape
I have also heard the risk of certain cancers goes up if you wait to spay after the first heat .. I maybe wrong, or misunderstood so it is something you may want to find out as well ... Good Luck ~ Deb & Tonka

thanks for the info. but see this is where im seeing it. my little pup Cali is 7 months and we weighed her the other day at the vet and she weighs 46 lbs. :O isnt normal females apbt get only to 50-55 ? thats why i want her to get to her full potential. but if this early spay no growing myth is not real than im deff going to spay. i was already planning on spaying. just not soon.

Wanted to pass along some info for PENNSYLVANIA RESIDENTS in Harrisburg or around the area.

The CPAA offers De-Sex in the city which is a FREE Spay/Neuter for Pit Bulls. Shots also if they need them.
This program has extended itself, I just spoke to the woman in charge this evening

You DO NOT need to be a resident of Harrisburg to use the program.

If you are in the surrounding areas contact them. If they do not have a vet in your area you may have to travel an hour if that to get to a participating vet.

For anyone in MA, Tufts University runs a free spay program Sept. through Feb.

Its located in North Grafton, you drop off on a Mon. or Tues, they do the surgery the next morning, they keep her there for another night, and then you pick her up the Wed. or Thurs. according to the drop off day. Its perfect for people who live a little far from N. Grafton and people who wouldn't normally be able to keep a close eye on for the whole next day of the surgery...... on top of the fact thats it free and they do a free heart worm test and give complimentary heart worm pill and flee/tick guard meds.


Sienna, my girl, was spayed there in November. They even corrected her umbilical hernia free of charge, the other vets I consulted wanted an extra $100 just to fix the hernia!


Sue, the director of the program is really great and took really good care of my baby. I totally recommend this program as the best low cost spay location in MA, I called almost every one there is. And you do not need to be a resident.

"From the Office of Dr. Susan Lee Mitchell:
We would like to inform everyone about the TCSVM Third Year Student Spay Program which starts up again this fall. The program runs from September through February.
Basically this lab is to help third year veterinary students learn how to perform spays on dogs. They are supervised by two doctors throughout the procedure as well as two technicians. This program is totally free and in addition to the spay the dogs receive a free heartworm and lyme test. We also give free rabies vaccines to those dogs who need it but we prefer the dogs already be vaccinated for rabies.
Third year veterinary students perform dog spays under the direct supervision of Cummings Surgery Faculty. Each week eight dogs are spayed. Most dogs come from local shelters and rescue organizations. However, there seems to be a shortage of intact females, which is great for the dogs and local communities, but bad for our students!

Dogs receive a complete physical exam, basic blood work and a heartworm test before surgery. Dogs are then spayed and treated with pain relieving medications postoperatively for one day. Each dog is sent home with free Heartguard and Frontline.

All dogs are booked in on Monday afternoons generally between 1:30 pm and 4:30 pm. There is some flexibility with those times. Four dogs are spayed on Tuesdays and the other four are spayed on Wednesdays. All dogs stay a minimum of 2 nights. The dogs spayed on Tuesday can go home on Wednesday and the ones done on Wednesday go home on Thursday usually around noon.

There is NO COST associated with this program. It is **FREE**!

If you have any contacts with local shelters or rescue groups, please pass on our contact information. If you know of anyone who wants his or her dog spayed, also please contact us. If you have an intact female dog that you would like to have spayed, please
contact us as well.

Requirements are the following:

1. Dogs must be INTACT FEMALES
2. Dogs must be of relatively good health, exhibiting no signs of illness.
3. Dogs must be at least 4 months old and less than 7 years old.
4. Dogs must be greater than 10 pounds and less than 70 pounds.
5. For dogs whose spay status is unknown, the abdomen should be clipped and examined for a spay scar BEFORE scheduling and appointment. This will prevent any inconvenience for you because we would not perform a surgery on a previously spayed dog.
6. They must be in good health—no significant heart murmurs, upper respiratory diseases, etc.
7. Highly aggressive dogs will be not accepted into the program.
8. We do not perform spays on “short nosedâ€

I looked into low cost spaying and neutering and i know this sounds selfish but they base it on the household income. Not just mine. I have an appt for my girl tomorrow but its going to cost me $280. The low cost places i looked into required a months paystubs plus a utility bill, plus they want the entire household income. I dont make nearly what my DH makes. But with his income we're not eligible. Anyone know of a day coming up that offers free/low cost spaying? Occasionally petco or petsmart will do a benefit, just couldnt find anything.

The rates are also not based on your income. They are top notch (have used them through a rescue group) and provide vaccinations as well. All of the care is the same that you would receive in the most expensive vet clinics in the area and the vets are stellar. Can't recommend these guys enough!
