Westminster police officers shot two pit bulls, killing one, after the dogs chased an animal-control officer and a woman Monday and then killed a cat.
The wounded pit bull was taken to Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, police said. The other died at the scene. The surviving dog will not be returned to its owner, Jackie Ayala, 20, pending a ruling by a judge who will determine whether the dog should be killed.
Officers served Ayala with a summons accusing him of two counts of unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog. A witness told police that Ayala had been looking for his pit bulls when the attacks occurred, police investigator Stephanie Topkoff said.
An animal-control officer went to the 4800 block of West 69th Avenue about 12:30 p.m., after reports that two aggressive pit bulls were running loose in the Lakeview Estates neighborhood, police said.
As the officer approached the dogs, a woman in her 50s was walking nearby, Topkoff said. The pit bulls started chasing the woman and the officer. They escaped by getting into the animal-control truck.
Police officers were summoned and saw the dogs attack a 19-year-old cat that was sitting on a porch in the 5100 block of West 69th Avenue, Topkoff said. The cat's owner tried to rescue the animal, but couldn't.
The officers cornered the dogs and tried to use a catch pole and a Taser to stop them, but were unsuccessful, police said. Two officers then fired their weapons at the animals.[/b]
Regardless of what the dogs did, had it been another breed they would not have been shot. I can promise you this.
This is my city, I live here, and want to be able to continue to live here with my dogs. The BSL threat is coming way to close to me then I want. I need to take a stand, can anyone tell me where I can start, where I can make a diiference. I'm open and listening.
