Excessive scratching

Hey all I know that APBT's are known to have skin issues. Infact all of my dogs at some point or other have been faced with it. Is there any way to diagnosis demdectic mange? He is constantly biting and scratching him self so much so that he ends up causing small cuts. I also know that his immune system is still immature and that it will be about a year 1/2 before it is fully developed. Is there anything that I could try to eliminate the uncomforted he is facing without having to go with the DIP method? I have used medicated shampoos and tried to supplement his food with extra vitamin filled gravy's ( all natural so they say) but to no avail sell scratching.

He's been to the vet who saw a minor outbreak. Stupidly I mentioned what I thought it was. So the prescribed a medicated shampoo, they didn't do a scrapping.
