On this topic, I'm going to reference this book I recently finished. It's about the man who developed one of the earliest war dog programs for the Marines in WWII. The book is filled with both touching and sad stories from training and in combat in the Pacific theater.

http://www.amazon.com/Always-Faithful-ebook/dp/B000FBJFM8/ref=sr_1_1_title_1_kin?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1326322879&sr=1-1

An interesting fact from his records: Among the 559 dogs who survived and returned from the Pacific combat theater, 540 were successfully detrained and lived happy civilian retirements without incident. Of the remaining 19, 15 had untreatable medical issues from the tough environment. And only 4 suffered incorrigably aggressive behavior. Given that environment and exposure to combat, this is most remarkable and a testament to dogs in general.

Anyone interested in adopting an MWD can go to:
http://www.militaryworkingdogadoptions.com/

There are detailed instructions about the application, how to contact Lackland and what to say etc.

It's nice that some of these dogs will have happy endings to hard and often crappy lives.

Thank you for the link Vin. I would love to adopt a MWD once my life becomes more settled.
