Thanks!! So I 'thought' my vet wasn't totally UP on Ataxia based on her response yesterday and when she called today, she said she had looked it up. (good for her). Her thoughts were that Ruby was unlikely to have received the double (bb?) gene so she didn't think it was worth testing for.

That makes sense, since for a dog to be affected they have to get a carrier or affected gene from both parents

so since you do know know her breed makeup, even if she was half Amstaff there is only a chance of having the carrier gene on one side and the other side would cancel that out since it is a recessive gene.

Well, how can anyone NOT worry about all of the (unconfirmed) possibility??? Any explanation could have been THE explanation - so why not look at everything initially. I tend to assume the worst and then be pleasantly surprised when it is a better outcome. It's just so easy to imagine anything/everything when you don't know..... We still don't know what it was and it could return 6 months from now... who knows? It's just better and much more efficient in the long run (if one can do it) to save the serious worry for a real, known issue instead of what-ifs < tho it's prolly good to be (semi-)prepared for those, too.......

OK - I'm freaking!!! She's doing it again and it seems more/stronger than before.... (we were playing fetch again - that seems to trigger it). The first thing I saw just now was loss of balance backward then she's bump her head into my leg to catch sideways balance.... Just bumped into our file cabinet in the house. All she wants to do is chase the ball (and the crows) and I'm just staring at her.... It seems short lived tho and seems to have tapered off. Dammit - I want an answer now!!!

It's mild and slow-mo but totally obvious - nothing violent just clear of you are watching that she's starting to tip but catches herself. I'm going to call the vet again on Monday (they close at noon on Saturdays). I'm reading more about vestibular issues now.... (ETA I looked for and did not see evidence of nystagmus - eyes were clear, still and focused)
