Hello

Postby Naomi » Mon Apr 09, 2012 11:51 am

Hello, I am Naomi, I live in the Northwest of the UK. I have adopted a pitbull x staffordshire bull terrier. He was 8 weeks yesterday. I have handreared him from 3 and a half weeks. I am a student veterinary nurse, in my final year of training :). I have 2 other dogs, a yorkie who I got as a birthday present when he was a pup he is now 8 years old & a mix breed, I have no idea what she is mixed with, she is called Stella and adopted her from the vets where I work at 12 years old, she was brought in to be put to sleep as her owner was moving abroad. I also have a cat named Onyx who is one and 2 rabbits, Steve and Mable who are also 1. :)

Here is Frankelin my pitbull x staffy.

Also, to finish off what I missed out, as he hasn't had the socialisation with his litter mates he goes to my mums with me on a regular basis as she has 7 dogs, an old english sheepdog, 2 jack russells, 2 westies, a pointer x collie x lab and a boxer x SBt, they are all vaccinated.

I have never had a SBT before or a bull breed. Though my mum had mastifs all her life. But I have always like SBT I think they have amazing temperaments and have always wanted one. Also, my boyfriend has a retriever and a sbt x sheperd who I spent a lot of time with as he works alot so we share the walking of them as when we move in together soon they will be coming along with me and Frankelin.

Also, the story of how I got Frankelin is quite sad and I would like to share it with you. His mum is a APBT and his dad a SBT. His mum gave birth to 9 pups, Frank was the runt of the litter. The owner of the mum and dad was a single mum of 5 children all under 5 in a rough area and his mum and dad were used to protect drugs as she was a dealer and she bred the two dogs to make a bit of extra money. Anyway Frank being the runt when it came his turn to feed his mum had already finished feeding the others and left him out, the other pups picked on him aswell. Anyway, the social services got involved with the family and then so did the RSPCA. The RSPCA claimed the mother, father and 8 pups, but would not take Frank as they didn't have enough staff to hand rear anymore pups and the owner was advised to take him to a vets to be hand reared. Anyhow this ladies next door neighbour was a friend of a friend and this friend got in touch with me as this lady was going to leave Frank to starve to death. Safe to say I went on a 2 hour drive to pick him up, I went the day before the mum and dad and other pups were taken so I got to meet mum and dad, and how they were used as guard dogs I have no idea, they had such beautiful temperaments. But that is how I got my Frankelin.

Franklin was lucky to land with you!

BSL is Breed Specific Legislation, AKA "Pitbull bans", which can vary in their requirement but basically put some level of restriction on pitbulls and/or Pitbull mixes, from required sterilization and muzzling to euthanasia.

Its a bit grey on that matter over here, I have mentioned it to my vet and he said that if the dog was to be with a gang member or something would probably be euthanasia, but if it is with someone good and the dog is friendly it is okay, but they have to be neutered and they can't be rehomed in centres, so Franks mum and the other pups will have been euthanased..

That's what I suspected. How sad :(

I'd brush up on this specific legislation so you know your, and especially Franklin's, rights if you should ever be caught in a sticky situation.

I have just had a quick look, will look properly after work tomorrow. But apparently it goes on dogs character now, so you can own a banned breed if it is friendly but I can't give him to someone else, I can't sell him or rehome him or that would be illegal and if anything where to happen where I was asked to have him euthanased if I wanted to appeal I have to contact defra and their exempt dogs index where then if they agreed with my case his name would be put down and he couldn't be euthanased for being a banned breed. They still have to be neutered though, which I don't mind I was going to any way.
