Hello! I am Harley. I am going to be 18 on April 22. I live near Georgetown, Texas. I have just adopted a pit bull mix. I have had a few dogs. I have had an Irish Wolfhound mix, A Bichon Yorkie, and a few labs. All of my dogs that I have had were all from Shelters and rescues.

I wanted to join this fourm because I need some behavioral advice for Gauge ( The pit bull I adopted). He is very lovable towards humans. But he can be pretty aggressive towards some dogs. A while ago he escaped from the cage he was being held in and attacked another dog. Here's a picture of him!

That was my whole plan . Do you think that getting a muzzle would be going a little too far? For occasions when we have to go to the vet and groomers? (The animal Shelter I adopted Gauge from says I have to take him to a vet for an exam before 10 days are up.)

There is no harm at all in teaching your dog to accept wearing a muzzle. There are many times in his life where it may be necessary, and if he is comfortable with wearing it that will make things all the better for him (and you!).

Dog aggression can occur in any breed of dog, though it can possibly be more common in this breed.

There is also a lot you can do to safely manage your dog, figure out what his tolerance levels are, and train him to not act like an ass around other dogs.

Some dogs that are dog aggressive can have other dog friends, some can not. That is something a reputable, responsible trainer could help you figure out safely. This can be a good place to find a trainer, as well as possible recommendations from folks here on the forum.

So we finally got to take him home today! He was pretty awesome on the ride home. He tried to climb up into the front seat with me and my boyfriend though. After we told him no he stayed in the back seat. He was pretty content with just sitting and watching the cars. We ended up making a quick trip to Petsmart to get a leash ( they gave up a make shift one), something for him to chew on while we are gone, and some more treats. We were going to get him a muzzle too, but the biggest one they had was sold out. But the trip inside of Petsmart was great! He only pulled as we were walking in. After we were in he walked next to me the whole time.

Here in Ontario our dogs are required to be muzzled so I'm speaking from experience when I tell you how important it is to get the right kind of muzzle.

I personally use the hotdogsalldressed leather muzzle and am quite happy with it.

Red, Taffys_Angel, lilangel and a few others have found a muzzle that they're really happy with but I can't for the life of me find the darn link from my phone.

I do like how the hotdogsalldressed leather muzzle looks. I just need to find a muzzle that feels nice on him. He has some old scars above his nose, and I don't know if he likes anything to be touching them.
