Liquid Diarrhea -- One week and more ...

Postby bigskyguy » Mon Apr 16, 2012 7:57 am

Hi all ... haven't posted for a while, but need some outside advice if possible ...

My dog Bob started having "liquid" diarrhea last Monday -- basically as if you turned on the water faucet and just let it run out. A little background ... he's 3-4 years old, active, healthy weight, doesn't ususally have problems. However, he did have a fairly severe case of pancreatitis back in November which resolved itself after a lot of supportive care. He's shown no other symptoms (no vomiting, no blood in stool, etc), and poop is yellowish brown in color. He is eating, drinking normal amounts. Not straining to go, no pain, and going at pretty much his regular times in the morning/evening.

Trip to his usual vet on Weds and they did fecal exam, giardia test, and bloodwork - everything came back neg, except for a slightly low albumin level in the bloodwork. She gave me metronidazole, and put him on a mix of canned w/d food and i/d kibble.

Three days pass, by Saturday Bob is starting to get pretty dehydrated, lethargic, however still eating and drinking fine. No change in stools at all - still liquid. But, I'm now getting pretty concerned, especially with the dehydration ... take him to the ER vet to have him looked at again. They do some additional tests (drichem BUN, lactate, vitalpath) and I think all of that came back looking normal. He did get subcutaneous fluid treatment, to help with the dehydration. They recommended taking him off the metro (since it hasn't changed anything), fasting him for a day (which I did on Sun), and keeping him on a bland diet.

Monday morning - still no change in the stool. Hydration seems to have helped a little, he's a little more responsive today, but still nothing like his usual self.

I'm getting pretty worried.

What would some of you do in this situation? Back to my regular vet ... or find an internal med specialist? They've mentioned doing xrays, ultrasound, endoscopy, biopsy as possible next steps ... and I'm not 100% confident in my regular vet if things have to go this far. How worried should I be? Any other advice/recommendations?

Did they check for parvovirus? A partial blockage might be a possibility too. There is a recall for salmonella contamination for Diamond Naturals, and Diamond makes so many dog foods, it might affect other brands as well, so it might be worth checking for that too. That sounds awful, I hope you can find out what's causing it soon.

i would try some probiotics, i wouldnt stop working with your vet but sometimes a boost in natural gut flora can help.

I don't have advice but that sounds real scary. I will keep you and Bob in my thoughts and hope you can find someone to help you work this out and that Bob will be well soon.
