I'll pass on that one. Your arguments, if it can even be called that, reflects just about all problems we have with dog ownership, lack of respect for living creatures and plain flipping selfishness..I'll do what I want.

So I guess when I had the ears cropped on my in-laws boar dog after his other ear had been grabbed and he had lost almost half the skin on his face....that I was being selfish?

The statement above is one thing, cropping or docking for health reason is a very different matter.Docked my piebold male, after trying to save his tail for a while:



His previous landing place, after being picked up by AC, was a "rescue" where he spent pretty much all his time in a crate, whipping his tail around when people would walk by and sitting in his own urine. His bone was almost exposed when I got the tail docked, and that decision was made for his own well being, not stinking cosmetic reasons.

Yes, my male will have cropped ears. Why? So he can have a better chance at placing in shows, and because I think it looks nice. It also doesn't hurt. Sure, it can if you go to some cheap-o vet...but ANYTHING can go wrong that way. I do not see ear cropping as cruel at all...if done correctly. It doesn't hurt and the dog doesn't miss them. It's SKIN.

I still can't believe people are convinced that cutting off a part of your body doesn't hurt. WTF?! Seriously?? As I've said before, cut off a part of YOUR OWN ear and let me see you claiming it doesn't hurt at all. Did anyone read this post?

I cropped Amber's ears when she was 11 weeks old. I do regret every bit of it, here is why: The crop was done with scissors (laser is also an option for less bleeding and quicker healing) by a licensed vet and they will not do it unless you have the second set of shots administered on your dog (normally done at 11-12 weeks of age). Her ears was taped against a cone on top of her head with the wound exposed with the plastic cone around her head that was at time pressing against the cone on her head causing discomfort. It was either that or the collar off and she would be scratching her ears due to discomfort. I was most paranoid during this time as I couldn't let her touch anything until it healed. She was regularly trying to scratch her ears only to hear her cry out because it would hurt her. She could not lay on her side until the stitches came out because it would cause discomfort. Once the cone came off the nuisance began.. The taping of the ears for the next 4 weeks to get them standing up was an absolute nightmare and it kept falling off or when I would come home the tape would be hanging from one ear. Between the crop and the numerous visits to the vet to get it taped again properly I spent around $1,000 for the procedure and follow up visits for what.. looks?

Not only you are putting a dog through an unneccessary and PAINFUL procedure, after croping you have to be careful your playful puppy doesn't rip out his stitches, which means no playing and socialising with other dogs, keeping an eye on him every second (unless he has an uncomfortable e-collar on), preventing him from scratching, keeping everything clean so it doesn't get infected, etc. And you do all of this in the most important weeks of your puppy's life. You miss out on some very important early socialising, I don't really see how that's worth it just because the dog "looks better" after (which doesn't mean he really does, natural ears are awesome and cropping can go bad if the vet doesn't know what he's doing, Ive seen many awful crop jobs).

It isn't "skin", it's cartilage. Good lord, if you're going to be such a pro-crop/dock fanatic, at least educate yourself.

If you honestly think it doesn't hurt, you're delusional or clueless. Of course it hurts.

Experience how? Your own ear has been reshaped surgically, sutured and then taped?

If your basing the above delusional opinion on the fact that you've seen dogs who have had their ears done and not shown obvious signs of pain then you have a lot of learning to do. You do realize that dogs are inherently stoic and it's unnatural for them to display signs of pain, right? That doesn't mean that aren't IN pain, otherwise why would veterinarians prescribe pain medications after surgical procedures.

Your decision as to whether you dog has his ears done is unfortunately yours, but your suggestion that it is a pain free procedure makes you seem callous and lacking empathy for your own pet. Shame on you.

The after surgery hurts the dog and its just dangerous to put a dog under for cosmetic reasons. I think dogs should only have surgery's that are needed such as spaying That has a purpose of controlling pet population Name 1 benifit that cropping ears has on a dog besides trying to win MONEY. YOU want your dogs ears cropped just so you can win some money that is so damn selfish

Exactly. If you never had a part of your body cut off, you don't have experience with it and you don't know it doesn't hurt. Common sense tells you it hurts. Every tattoo, every piercing, every plastic surgery, every body modification HURTS, anyone telling you it doesn't hurt at all is either lying or has an unusually high pain tollerance. But we decide we're going to do that to ouselves, we are the ones who will go through a painful procedure to "look better". To put an innocent dog through it is selfish.

Its selfish to crop a dogs ears for looks and so it can win shows that the dog probally doesnt even want to be in. Winning does nothing for the dog but for the owner to get money prizes you would cut off part of your dogs ears just to win money thats so fizzle selfish you shouldnt even own a dog. Cropping in case of medical reasons in different but cropping just for the look or to win shows is stupid as fizzle.

The fact that you think it doesn't hurt really boggles my mind, it sounds like you convinced yourself if that so you don't feel as bad doing it.
Considering a cartilage piercing in the ear hurts, I think it's pretty safe to say having part of your ear cut off would be very painful. Animals don't often show pain or illness as a survival mechanism.

Heck, a non-cartilage ear piercing will hurt a bit afterward, at least mine did. The initial piercing only burned, but it hurt for a month or so after.
