Substitute for peanut butter? (allergy)

Postby anashenwrath » Mon Jul 30, 2012 10:30 am

Now ten-years young, we decided to take Scylla in for a full senior screening. The works. One of the things they offered was an allergy screening. Scylla eats anything with gusto, and has never had a reaction, BUT we have noticed she licks herself a lot and she gets itchy spots easily. Maybe it was a food allergy. So we went for the screening.

Wow. she came back positive/borderline for: alfalfa, wheat, potato, sweet potato, corn, barely, salmon, soy, and peanut!

Obviously none of these are too big a deal, because she eats almost all of them in her raw patties and kibble. Of course I'm going to go through her food and make sure I avoid these ingredients from now on.

But peanuts??? she loves peanut butter. she loves it! :crybaby:

I'm trying to think of what I can give her as a substitute. Can dogs have almond butter? Is there another cheap, accessible, pasty product I can try? She gets kong-filler (liver paste in a can), but I feel like that's so salty and full of preservatives. I've never had a dog with an allergy before (to my knowledge... now i realize how sneaky allergies can be!)

I was going to suggest sweet potato lol

What about low fat yogurt? Or plug the hole and freeze some low sodium broth?

My guys love cooked carrots-- could you purée those?

Yogurt!!! that's a great idea!!!! and pureed veggies too!

i actually do the frozen broth thing (thought that was my genius idea!) but you have to plan ahead with that.

Thank you so much Allison!

What about canned pumpkin? Probably not an everyday item, but every once in a while. Trooper has the hershey squirts (started in the middle of last night) and I've giving him pumpkin in his Kong-he loves it.

Our Peanut doesn't digest nuts well. Or peanuts. She gets horrible gas and runny poo.

If we have to give her meds we give them to her in whipped low fat cream cheese. She also loves plain yoghurt.

Was this a serum test?

If so, the results are highly unpredictable and inaccurate, and they are NOT recommended by dermatologists.
