wobblers syndrome

Anyone heard of it? Thunder was just diagnosed with this last week and is now on a corticosteroid called prednisone. He doesn't seem like himself seems depressed.

I know his time is almost up but being only six its hard not to keep thinking maybe something will work. He has hip dysplasia too but the vet set hp comes in varying degrees and that is not what his main problem is.

He's very wobbly and falls a lot. The vet has taken video of him to send to the vet university here and we are waiting further treatment options.

Is your vet certain it's Wobbler's? I don't think I've ever heard of that in an APBT.

I have heard of cerebellar ataxia, which has been passed through a number of amstaff lines.

Both diseases suck, so I'm very sorry that your poor dog is suffering from neurological problems.

I would get a second opiniOn from a neurolOgist. Wobblers is rare in all but a few breeds, and there may be better treatment options

Hi all thanks for the replies. The vet called and the neurologists at the vet school believes its more severe than wobblers that it is more likely a tumor on his brain stem ...but not to rule out a severe inner ear infection. So he's taking amoxicillin and continuing his prednisone.

Amoxicillin is not what I'd consider broad spectrum coverage for an inner ear infection... might want to see about clavamox (has a second ingredient to make amocillin stronger and more broad spectrum), or double coverage with another antibiotic. Clavamox is expensive, but worth it.

For the homevet should I just sign up as new client and go through that?

I used Dr. Jeff nearly 10 years ago, at the time my initial contact was through a phone call, referred by my traditional vet. In looking at his site, I think the new client is the way you're supposed to do it. Read the pages, he'll want a bunch of info first.

Hello its been a while since I've been back on the boards...I was finally able to get the internet at home again.

Thunder is still the same. I just don't get it that there is nothing else to help him. He was on prednisone and acted bummed out when he was on it. I tapered him from it and he seems much better, more energy, and just more "up beat."

I asked the vet the other day about an MRI because they diagnosed him through a video that was sent to a neurologist by watching his gait I guess they were looking for something specific in his gait that weighs in as being a brain stem tumor so that is his diagnosis. I am waiting to get an actual MRI done, trying to get costs, procedure, etc the vet is suppose to call me.

While you are saving for an MRI, seriously consider having him tested for Ataxia. The test is $150 and done through OptiGen.
