Hello everyone, i would be very thankfull if you could help me find the solution for the following problem. My dog ( female pitbull, 25 kg, 4.5 years old) has a knee pain and problems with hips. I've noticed that 15 days ago after I came home from a long walk I took with her. After that, every time she walks, she lays down and puts her right leg up. Few days ago I visited the vet and he diagnosed her with coxarthrosis bilateralis ( I don't know what that means). The doctor then told me that the hips weren't that much of a problem but that the knees were so je prescribed her pills called PFIZER Rimadyl which she has to take 2 times a day for one week. He also said that she will have to go to the surgery if the pills won't help. As i didn't really get full information about her condition, I am asking You to give me your opinion or advice. I'm not sure if I should take her for walks in the following 7 days period in which she will be taking pills or not? Also, if You have any other option for me, You are very welcome to suggest! One more thing; she has been allergic to dog food for the past 8 months thats why she has been eatinh antiallergic dog food called Trovet Hypoallergenic RRD. My question is: does that have something to do with the knees problem?

But basically, it's bilateral (both sides) hip displaysia with secondary arthritic changes in the knee joint. That's what I see in the x-rays. Her left hip joint (right side in x-ray) has major structural changes and is more than likely causing pain/discomfort. This will cause the dog to change its gait and put more strain on other joints, causing early wear and arthritis. The right hip isn't as severe, but there are arthritic changes to it as well as shallow sockets.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your baby has pretty severe hip displaysia. With surgery and medical management, she can be comfortable. Unfortunately it will effect her quality of life as she ages.

Oh hey neigbour I'm from Ljubljana, Slovenia. It's nice to see more European people here. I would really recommend going to a specialist - an orthopedic vet, not just a regular vet if your dog has hip displaysia. Oh an welcome to the forum, your Kyra is beautiful!

Rimadyl is great for controlling pain and discomfort from arthritis, so its a great start to keeping your kiddo comfortable.

In addition to hip dysplasia, I'm also seeing signs of inflammation in the knee that might be a sign of a torn Cranial Cruciate Ligament. This is another common condition in large breed dogs, and may be the surgery your veterinarian was talking about.
