Dear Tiva has died. The vet came out Monday while I was driving down to the farm, and gave Tiva a mild sedative so she would be calm until I arrived. We all spent the night out in the orchard, and in the morning the vet came back and gave her the euthanasia shots. Naomi, her amazing housesitter who kept her happy and beloved while we were in Sweden for 9 months, was able to come down to the farm and say goodbye as well.

She was very peaceful and in no pain over the night and in the morning. Vanya was sweet with her, and they hung out together a little bit. By late morning, she was clearly passing over, and even if the vet hadn't come, I think she might have quietly died.

She lived to almost 18, and she was the most loving, amazing, stubborn, wonderful dog. She survived so much--being dumped, covered with tar, lactating, starving, on the streets of New York. Trapped in a burning apartment (but rescued just in time by the fire department). Then we rescued her, and for the next 16 years, she chugged along through 2 cancers, tail amputation for one of those cancers, being hit by a car, falling off a waterfall...She was a survivor. And she was full of joy, delighted with the farm, with her pals, with every person on earth that she ever met.

We'll miss her so much.

Here she is, snoozing in the orchard during our last morning together yesterday.

Sounds like she had a good run. May we all have our dogs as long as you had. :)

Thanks for your kind words. When Vanya and I play in the orchard, I keep looking around for her until I remember she's gone.
