cushings disease?

Postby Megan » Thu Dec 19, 2013 8:28 am

Does anyone have experience with cushings?

Grace slipped on the ice last week. Scratched her stomach, I cleaned it and thought nothing more until suddenly monday it looked worse. Cleaned it again, and it started looking very different and bumpy. Called our vet as it concerned me, and she also started vomiting. I thought maybe infection. She also has a UTI end of nov, and she was once again peeing in the house so i wanted her checked for that.

Vet took one look at her tummy and said -Calcinosis Cutis. She said its almost 100% of the time found in cushings dogs.... Grace does NOT look like a cushings dog, no bloated stomach, no increased thirst, no sunken head, not lethargic, no muscle weakness. She IS urinating in house, and IS acting hungry all the time. Her only two classic signs. Negative for other signs but the CC.

Her bloodwork came back perfect. Her urine was fine, but the cortisol test is a send out ill have those results tomorrow. She has a biopsy today on the CC to confirm its diagnosis.

Should her urine come back high we will begin the testing next week to see which type she has.

Can anyone offer any additional advice? Can I help anything with diet changes? We are currently using 4-Health Grain Free from tractor supply. Was thinking maybe taking the raw plunge?

Has anyone seen CC without cushings? Vet said there is a very very very very small chance but almost everytime a dog has cc its cushings so I am not hopeful.

I don't know anything abotu cushings, but wanted to send well wishes. I don't know if you're friends with the lady from Collarmania on FB but she's going through something similar. For her-she's always expected one of her dogs having it but the vets always brushed it off. The dog was recently diagnosed and now they're looking for a plan of action. I don't know that she'd have the information you're looking for but I also understand how helpful it is to have someone in a similar situation. Someone to understand what you're going through, you know?

~hugs~

I've only seen CC in crushing a or from inappropriate steroid use for allergy dogs...

I've seen extremely variable symptoms in dogs with cushings, but never seen a dog get diagnosed that didn't have an ALP of at least 800 on blood work tests. If the ALP is normall I'd be skeptical of cushings and wait to see what the biopsies say.

Sorry! Things are crazy. Biopsy came back positive as calcinosis cutis. We went ahead and did the LDDS test on monday. With the holidays I got her results today. Cortisol levels didn't follow results to distinguish between pituitary or adrenal/ that she has cushings. Cortisol started high and dropped with each draw... we are doing an acth stim test on tuesday or thursday. That should also check for addisons.

If we dont have answers with that she would like me to follow up with a specialist, and it just happens that the vet who did the pathology on her biopsy is semi local so we will most likely be sent there.
