Hello! My Life With Tazer

Postby TazerTaze19 » Fri Mar 28, 2014 4:30 pm

I am a dog owner for three years now. First dog I ever had (unfortunately). His name is Tazer and he was adopted so I’m not quite sure he specific breeds, but I believe he is a mix between Pit, Border Collie, and something else. Since he was adopted he did not have too many details on his birth since he and his sister were abandoned. They actually said that he was a Lab, Retriever, and Border Collie mix. I think that they were afraid to say he was pit, but when he was a puppy, you could not really tell that he was. I recently moved in to a place with my girlfriend who also has a dog, and now I consider him mine as well, his name is Youko. He’s part Jack Russell Terrier and part Beagle. He was also adopted by my girlfriend, and like Tazer, they did not have the breed as they said he was part Chihuahua and that he would not get bigger than 10 lbs. He’s not 40 lbs. They two dogs get along pretty well for the most part. They’re almost always together and have learned tendencies from each other. Back in October 2013 Tazer was diagnosed with Addison’s Disease which affects his kidney’s and we almost lost him because no one could diagnose him until we took him to a specialist. So now he’s on daily medicine and monthly shots for life. They’re expensive but it’s worth it because he’s got so much more life to live. Tazer is a great dog 95% of the time and I would not trade him for the world. But there are times were he has snapped at other dogs, mainly my girlfiend’s brother’s dog, who is also part Pit and a rescue dog. When they’re together, they get along and will play and they even look and have some of the same mannerisms. But every so often, something triggers him and he gets angry and snaps. He’s never hurt him or anyone when he does, but it scares me that it happens and it’s hard to find the trigger. From what I’ve gathered it would randomly happen when the other dog is getting attention or Tazer feels trapped. He has really bad anxiety, especially separation anxiety, but just bad anxiety in general which I think triggers this too. And I feel that sometimes when the play gets too much or Tazer feels abandoned when someone is paying attention to another dog and not him, he starts to get scared and freak out. Normally he takes his separation anxiety or most anxiety out on his toys, bed(s) or anything he can get his hands on. When we leave, we keep him and Youko in only in the kitchen and bedroom, where he sleeps, so it helps him feel comforted and it’s like his den. He cannot see the front door or windows when we are gone. However, we noticed that when a package is waiting for us, something seems to be messed up in the house. We think the doorbell is one of his triggers of anxiety and since he cannot get to the door and see who it is, he gets scared, wimpers, and looks for the first thing to chew to calm himself down. This even happens when we are home. We have a large front window that you can see the how street from and anytime someone comes to our door, he starts to go crazy and cries and scratches walls and windows. Youko is a very protective dog, and he is very territorial and a beagle, so his howl is loud and deep. I feel that all the commotion he makes Tazer go crazy and then exacerbates his anxiety. More recently my sister and brother in law got a new dog and we tried to get them to meet and she’s a puppy Husky with a lot of energy. Normally Tazer is full of energy too, but he wanted nothing to do with her. Their last Husky, who just passed away a few months back, and Tazer got along great. And we take Tazer to a dog beach and let him off the leash with a bunch of other dogs, and he always does great and gets worn out. So I’m hoping to get some help and some pointers on all things Pits and dogs and hopefully be able to help others with my experience as well. Bottom line, I love my dogs.

welcome.
you sound like a very caring and committed dog owner - you will find lots of info here.

will quickly say that your dogs should be separated when you are not there to avoid a scuffle you are not there to take care of and while it can be managed dog aggression to some degree is common in this breed - some links to start below - these really are great and will make for a smoother household etc., my guy Nick was quite good with other dogs and had some play buds etc., but I was also smart about it... prevention/management is key. if he does have husky and b collie in the mix these are also breeds that tend to pick and chose their "friends"...

you can also try crating or covering windows etc., bottom line there are things that can help! and smart folks here....

Thanks for the websites. I'll give them a look. I'm always up for learning and trying new things with the dogs. As for the interactions with the other dogs, I definitely make sure I'm always there. Unfortunately, I get that not every dog will get along, but there's always hope! I look forward to posting more and learning more and trying to help others. Pictures below. Tazer is the black and white one and Youko is the brown and white. They look very similar in their markings and it people always ask if they're somehow related. These two really have formed a pack together and they're real brothers.
