Please help with HP

Hi all,
I am sure this topic has been discussed at length before, therefore i am just asking for links. After a week away at a cottage, i have noticed the signs of HD with my girl, i am so upset over this, and i wished i had read more about this subject before..she was, and has been showing the signs of it before, this week has been the worst, of course she had way extra excersize, but most of it was swimming. She was in serious pain this week, from her running and swimming, her hips were bad, she is 3 years old. Any info you can send would be GREATLY APPRICEATED, THANKS!!!

That sucks. 3 is young, not at all unheard of, but young. A friends bully had the same thing at two. The vet recommended Nutro with Glucosamine and an extra dose on top. 1.5 years later he is fine. He hadn't deteriorated very much. I wouldn't suggest Nutro over other foods but the Glucosamine/Condrointin will help, along with MSM/Ester-C caps sprinkled over food.

An agitated pelvic injury and/or simple tail sprain in the location of the rear where all of the nerve endings come through can cause the same thing. Doc had this and looked like he had 2 broken legs for a while. For the first 5 days I had him he couldn't even stand to pee. I know this wasn't a direct answer to your question, but keep your fingers crossed for other causes.

I would definitely start supplementing with glucosamine and chondroitin, MSM wouldn't be a bad idea either. I personally wouldn't bother feeding food or treats with it added, I would go directly to the source and pill or top dress with it. Higher concetration is going to be more benfitial.

OHhhh hip dysplasia..that reminds me..are pit bulls more proned to it than other breeds? Should I be doing some kind of tests every year to make sure she's safe?

Yeah..you guessed it..I'm paranoid when it comes to my dog's health :peace:

hip dysplasia (a malformed ball and socket in the hip joint).
anyways tests are usually done at 2 years of age to be certified free of the problem by a veterinary radiologist specialist . there are varios severeties of it mild,modreate, severe . severe almost always requires some kind of orthopedic surgery or the dog eventually not be able to walk

Thanks everyone, the links i have recieved are great! Moto, i already do feed her Nutro with the glucosamine for large breeds, she is a rottweiler mix aswell, so i thought that would help. I do hope it's like you said, an injury, but i have been noticing some signs of it lately, especially her wobbly gait at times when walking. The only way to tell from what i have read it getting x-rays done, so i think it is finally time to do it.

im not sure, but when my dog was a pup... she had hip n rear leg problems. like she couldnt walk or nothing... she was just really really in pain. she was like this for a lil while, so we took her to the vet... they said she needed surgery that was like 3 grand, or put her down... we didnt want to put her down... cuz she was still soo young, i told my buddies mom... n she told me to give her sum tylenol... like a 1/4 piece of it... like once a day... and after like 3 dayz... she was fine... and it didnt come back.... probably an unrelated problem... but i just wanted to share....

I am hoping it is just an injury, i have been working with Natis quite a bit, and wish to continue to do so

She is a flippen brat, but smart as a whip, i would hate to see that lesson with her condition, whatever that may be..

I noticed you said you gave your dog Tylenol? From the links i have received, and my vets advice, this is NOT recommended. I give Bufferian(sp??) it is coated for the stomach. If you talk to your vet, they will tell you what is best to give your dog, as well as the recommended dosage.

yes, the dogs' livers are not able to breakdown the "Tylenol".
on the other hand, Aspirin [especially the coated kind] are the best. there are others that the vets have available just ask:)

here are other pills that have tylenol in it:acetaminophen (a see ta MIH no fen)
Anacin-3 Maximum Strength, Childrens Tylenol, Tylenol, Tylenol Caplet, Tylenol Caplet Extra Strength, Tylenol Extended Release, Tylenol Extra Strength, Tylenol Gelcap Extra Strength, Tylenol Suspension and generic and other "off" brands
