Anyone else take their mutts jogging on concrete?
Poplin and I will go for 8 miles or so a few times a week; we live in the middle of the city.... We go late at night after the concrete and air have both cooled from the summer heat..... Everytime we get home after the run, his pads are BLACK. Sometimes (about as often as not) he licks them a bit because they're sore. One time he managed to cut a pad open, maybe stepping on glass or something? I'm not sure. I fixed it up for him though and it healed right up.
Anyway I'm an active guy, and Poplin LOVES going on these runs with me.... He freaks out whenever he sees me get my skates out.... "We're going for a jog?!?!?!? WAHOO!!!!!"
.......but I don't like seeing him in that kind of pain every other night.
We've been doing these long runs for about 4 weeks or 5 weeks now.... (started out shorter)...
Will he continue to build up callouses on his pads as we do this or should I look into protecting him somehow? I've seen the little "doggie booties" and I'm not convinced of a few things...
1) I don't know if they're worth the price.
2) I don't know how well they would actually hold up with the kind of running Poplin does
3) I don't think Poplin would enjoy wearing them, let alone RUNNING in them.
Any advice you super active owners could give would kick some serious booty.
