happy tail syndrome

i was wondering what everyone's experience with happy tail syndrome is? roxy has busted the end of her tail a few times, but it's never anything serious, requiring vet attention. where do you draw the line on when to keep letting it happen (so long as it's not serious), wrapping the tail, or docking? my fiance had a pit years and years ago that needed to have his tail cropped due to happy tail, so i'm a little concerned.

my budy has a red, red nose who has the same problem. hes a tall boy so his tail is real long, thin and super boney. when he gets excited its like a whip and it really hurts to get hit by it. any way its happened a few times, he splits the end of his tail open and sprays blood all over. it hasnt happened lately may be because he has developed such a calluss there.

if your dog keeps fracturing it's tail then i would understand if they had to crop it for health reasons. i haven't heard of it before but it does make sense. im interested to see what others here say.
