A bit of a prediciament

Postby badkittyamy » Tue Aug 26, 2008 1:48 pm

Okay so my friend found a pitbull with cherry eye (in one eye) and unaltered dumped at a local gas station. We don't want to take it to the pound because well he's a sweet guy. Neither of us can keep him any suggestions? We are unsure of how easily he would be adopted due to the cherry eye (we fear the humane society may opt to put the dog to sleep rather than do the operation and the pound puts the dog to sleep after 5 days) I would go through careful screening on CL but unaltered i simply don't trust him to not end up in the wrong hands. (we plan on getting him fixed after 14 days if no owner has contacted us)

Should I just suck it up and take the poor boy to the pound? I don't want to see him put to sleep simply because of a cherry eye but i can't afford the surgery myself.

Any ideas for fund-raiser activities I can do to help raise money for the cherry eye removal? They said at the cheapest it would be $100 and it could be up to $200 they can't give me an exact quote for the surgery.

Not the best pictures but I don't want to go picture happy till he gets settled in. When he gets more settled I'm going to start training him in Basic Obedience to help his adoption chances. When he is settled I will be able to see more of his actual personality and see how temperament testing goes. he seems accepting of pretty much everything now but that could change once he's settled in.

That dog is beautiful....beyond beautiful. I dont think his life deserves to end because of 200.00 operation. Im sure people on here will help you if you were willing to take on the responsibility of taking him to the vet, have surgery done and then give him after care before you rehome him. Of course spay/neuter if its not done already, all up to date shots. Ya know the drill, Im sure I dont have to tell you.

I wish you GOOD LUCK in whatever you decide to do, but that dog is stunning. I would help him in any way I could.

Keep us advised please.

IF you dont have a paypal maybe see if the vet would take payments over the phone from those who wish to donate?? Then you can pm it to anyone who is interested in helping or post it here..??? Once all the funds are raised then he can go in.. I would ask him the cost for the surgery/neuter/all health shots/tests..

He's a damn pretty boy... I wish I could have another..:(

Just a thought...I have a paypal account that has been lying there dormant for months now. If you don't have paypal, I could take the donations and make one lump sum payment to the vet of your choice by check (hard mailing) or by CC (by phone). I'd be happy to keep records of payments received.

I'm going to PM you my "real" email addy. It contains my full name, not comfortable posting in open forum.

If you don't want the help, or folks around here don't know me well enough, no sweat. The offer's just out there. :))

How many of you think this is a good idea? there is a website called fundable and you basically set up a page to accept donations I have used it before and it is a secure service.

If the donations don't meet the goal (which I have to decide how much to set it at) then everyone has the money to the accounts they were donated from automatically. Does that sound like a viable option? It's a more reliable method than paypal.

They used Fundable for Pearl's surgery and it was cool. Everyone who donated could go look at the status whenever they wanted.

I'll set everything up tomorrow, no rush as done through separate agencies i assume the second surgery will have to wait till after the neuter for a week or so.

The other thing you may want to do is post the vets information and set up an account there in the dogs name so that all funds can go directly to the dog, I've done that in the past as well. Most vets are happy to take a credit card over the phone.

i'll see if my vet does that not sure as i never have the same vet when i go there. I like fundable because if enough money isn't raised it just goes back automatically.

Talk to the vet who's neutering him see if he'd do the eye at the same time.. Sierra had that eye thing where the eye lids roll in geeze I forgot what its called.. anyway the vet spayed her and did both eyes at the same time.. he said it saves Sierra from going under 2x and saves me money by having them both done at the same time... he should be able to give you a reasonable estimate of all costs...

the place that is doing the spay an neuter is only spay and neuter it's a discount service for low income dog owners. So that not an option they charge 55 and then 6 for the neuter and required rabies.

To use the vet I am using for the cherry eye removal would cost me 86 for the discounted neuter.
